JetBlue Proposes Code-Share Agreement with British Airways

JetBlue Airways is seeking regulatory approval for a code-share agreement with British Airways, aiming to expand its network reach significantly. This partnership would allow both airlines to sell seats on each other's flights, offering travelers a wider range of destinations across Europe and the United States.

"We are always looking for new ways to offer our customers more choice when traveling," JetBlue said in a statement. The agreement covers over 75 destinations in the United States, including 39 from New York and 36 from Boston, along with 17 cities in Europe.

Code-sharing agreements are common in the airline industry, allowing carriers to extend their reach beyond their own networks. JetBlue has been progressively increasing its services to Europe; however, despite these expansions, JetBlue's trans-Atlantic presence remains smaller compared to larger alliances.

This approach differs from a more extensive joint venture like the existing transatlantic partnership between American Airlines and British Airways. However, for JetBlue, it presents a strategic opportunity to compete with larger transatlantic alliances.

American denied saying it was involved in the JetBlue-British Airways plan. "The code-share provides more options for transatlantic travel, which travelers can appreciate, whether flying on the Atlantic Joint Business or otherwise,” stated American Airlines.

This news follows a year after the federal court blocked JetBlue's attempt to partner with American Airlines. Unlike the earlier proposal, this new code-share agreement focuses solely on code sharing and avoids coordination of schedules and routes.

The agreement hinges on approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation. While British Airways has yet to comment, the potential for a strengthened route network suggests this partnership could benefit both airlines and travelers.
