JetBlue requires its unaccompanied minor service for young children flying alone, charges a fee for it each way, and has historically allowed unaccompanied minors only on nonstop flights. Once a child reaches the airline's upper age limit, they can fly as a regular passenger without the service.
JetBlue adjusts its policy from time to time, so confirm the current age limits, fee, and route restrictions on the airline's site or with a travel expert before you book. If you would rather have it handled for you, our experts book unaccompanied minor flights on JetBlue and every other US carrier.
Which ages need JetBlue's unaccompanied minor service?
JetBlue has fewer age bands than some competitors:
- Below the minimum age, a child cannot fly alone under any circumstances and must be accompanied by an adult.
- From the minimum age up to the airline's cutoff, the unaccompanied minor service is mandatory. You cannot opt out.
- Above the cutoff, JetBlue treats the young traveler as an adult passenger. The airline has generally not offered an optional paid service for older teens, so parents should plan their own support: a phone, a clear pickup plan, and a contact at the destination.
The specific ages have shifted over the years. Check the airline's current policy, or see our JetBlue unaccompanied minor and infant page where we keep the current numbers alongside infant and lap-child rules.
What is included in the service?
The service covers supervision from departure gate to arrival gate. Typically that means:
- A gate pass so the drop-off adult can escort the child through security and wait at the gate.
- Pre-boarding, with the child seated in a designated area of the cabin near the crew.
- Crew members who check in with the child during the flight and help with meals, restroom trips, and questions.
- An escort off the aircraft and a formal handoff to the named pickup adult after an ID check.
Cabin crew supervise while doing their normal duties, so pack your child's carry-on as if they will be entertaining themselves.
Forms, ID, and airport procedures
JetBlue enforces its documentation rules strictly. On departure day:
- Arrive early and check in at the counter, not a kiosk.
- The drop-off adult shows a government-issued photo ID and completes the unaccompanied minor form: the child's information, the drop-off adult's contact details, and the full name, phone number, and address of the person picking the child up.
- Staff issue a gate pass. The adult escorts the child to the gate and must stay there until the flight has departed.
On arrival, the pickup adult shows a government-issued photo ID at the gate or designated meeting point. JetBlue will only release the child to the person named on the form. If the pickup person changes after departure, call the airline immediately.
Why JetBlue's nonstop rule matters
The biggest difference between JetBlue and larger airlines is that JetBlue has historically permitted unaccompanied minors only on nonstop flights. No connections and no itineraries that require the child to switch aircraft. It limits your options: if there is no nonstop JetBlue flight between your two cities, JetBlue is not the right carrier for a child flying alone.
JetBlue also caps the number of unaccompanied minors per flight, and school-break dates fill up weeks ahead. Book early, and if JetBlue has no nonstop, a travel expert can check Delta, Alaska, or another carrier that allows supervised connections. Compare policies on our airline policies hub.
How much does JetBlue charge for unaccompanied minors?
JetBlue charges a fee per child, per direction, in addition to the fare. The amount is set by the airline and changes periodically, so check the airline's current policy for the exact figure. It is separate from any checked-bag charges. JetBlue includes a carry-on on most fares but charges for checked bags on its basic fares; see our baggage fees guide so you know what to expect at the counter.
Tips for parents
- Book by phone or through an agent. Unaccompanied minor service usually cannot be added at online checkout, and it must be attached to the reservation before the day of travel.
- Pick early flights. If a morning flight is delayed, JetBlue can rebook onto a later nonstop the same day. A late evening cancellation may leave your child at the airport with you overnight.
- Explain the process to your child. Only uniformed JetBlue staff will help them, and they should not leave the gate area with anyone else.
- Stay reachable until you get confirmation the pickup adult has the child.
