Bereavement travel is a last-minute trip to be with family after a death or during a serious illness, and Fond Travels books it for you over the phone so you do not have to sit in front of a search engine at a hard moment. You call, tell one person where you need to be and when, and we find the soonest reasonable flights on major airlines, check whether the airline offers a bereavement or compassion fare, and book the trip for you. This page is for anyone traveling for a funeral, a memorial, or to reach a loved one in the hospital. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, and there is never any pressure to decide quickly.

Who this is for?

This service is for people who have just received difficult news and need to travel soon, often within a day or two. That includes family members flying home for a funeral or memorial service, relatives traveling to be at a bedside, and people who need to stay for an uncertain length of time to help settle affairs. It is also for the friend or relative who is doing the organizing on behalf of someone who is grieving. You do not need to know your exact dates, and you do not need to know anything about airline policies. You only need to tell us where you are, where you need to be, and roughly when. We will take it from there, calmly and at your pace.

What is a Bereavement Flight?

Our hearts go out to you. Let us help you be with your loved ones with a fare that's kind.

Bereavement flights, or compassion fares, are discounted airfares for individuals traveling due to a close family member's death or severe illness. These fares offer financial relief for last-minute bookings and typically provide lower prices and flexible options compared to standard fares. While many airlines have discontinued bereavement fares in recent years, some still offer these discounts with flexible booking options and varying policies.

What's included when you book with us

  • A search of the soonest practical departures on major airlines, including same-day and next-day options, from the airports nearest you.
  • A check of any bereavement or compassion fare your airline offers, compared honestly against the regular last-minute fare, so you get whichever is genuinely better for you.
  • Guidance on the exact documentation the airline asks for, if a bereavement program applies, so you can gather it once and be done.
  • Flexible return options explained in plain language, including what it costs to change the return if your plans are uncertain.
  • Seats together for family members traveling from the same city, and assistance requests for anyone who is elderly or unwell.
  • Coordination for relatives arriving from different cities, so everyone lands within a reasonable window of each other.
  • Hotel and rental car arrangements near the family home, hospital, or service, handled in the same call if you want them.
  • Your confirmation sent by email or text, and one number to call afterward if anything needs to change.

What to know before you book

A few things are helpful to know, but please do not worry if you do not have all of this ready. We will tell you what is needed for your specific booking and help you get there one step at a time.

  • Bereavement fares vary by airline. Some airlines offer a discounted or flexible fare for travel connected to a death or serious illness in the immediate family; others no longer do. Where one exists, the qualifying relationships and the amount of the discount differ. We'll confirm for your booking.
  • Documentation. When a bereavement program applies, the airline may ask for the name of the deceased or ill family member, your relationship, and the name and phone number of the funeral home, hospital, or hospice. Occasionally a death certificate or a doctor's note is requested after travel. We will tell you exactly what your airline requires; often it is simply information given over the phone.
  • The regular fare is sometimes better. A bereavement fare is usually a discount from a full-price flexible ticket, which can still be higher than a regular last-minute fare. We compare both and book the one that serves you better, and we explain the difference.
  • Uncertain return dates. If you do not know when you will come home, tell us. We will look for fares with easy change rules, or book a one-way outbound and arrange the return when you know more.
  • ID and passports. Domestic flights require a REAL ID-compliant license, passport, or other accepted ID. If you are traveling internationally for a funeral, you will need a valid passport, and some countries require a visa even for short stays. Ask us about current requirements; we can help with expedited options where they exist.
  • Timing. Same-day and next-day seats are usually available on most routes, though the number of options narrows as the day goes on. Calling as soon as you know you need to travel gives you the most choices. Call for current pricing on your dates.
  • Travel insurance and existing bookings. If you already hold a ticket for another trip, some airlines will waive change fees for a family death; if you bought travel insurance, it may cover changes. Tell us and we will look into both for you.

Common situations we handle

A parent has passed and the funeral is in two days. The caller is in California and needs to be in Ohio, ideally tomorrow morning. Our expert finds the earliest reasonable departure, checks the airline's bereavement policy, compares it against the standard fare, and books the better option. The return is left flexible, and the caller has a confirmation within minutes of hanging up.

A family member is in intensive care and no one knows how long. The caller needs to leave today and does not know if they will be gone three days or three weeks. We book a one-way outbound so nothing is wasted, explain how to arrange the return later, and note the caller's number so a single call adds the return when the time is right.

Siblings flying in from three different cities. Everyone wants to arrive on the same day and share a rental car from the airport. We book each sibling on flights that land within a couple of hours of each other, put the rental in one name, and send each person their own confirmation so no one has to forward emails at a difficult time.

Are Bereavement Flights Worth It?

Whether bereavement flights are worth it depends on your needs and airline policies. While these fares offer much-needed relief during a tough time, their availability and benefits vary. Weighing the savings against potential restrictions and comparing them with other fare options can help you decide if a bereavement flight is the best choice for your situation.
