Qatar Airways Flight Hits Mid-Air Turbulence, Injuring 12 Passengers
A Qatar Airways flight en route from Doha to Dublin encountered unexpected turbulence on Sunday, resulting in minor injuries for twelve passengers and crew members.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner (flight QR017) landed safely at Dublin Airport on schedule despite the mid-air incident. Upon landing, the aircraft immediately received emergency services, including airport police and the fire and rescue department. The airport's statement noted, "Due to six passengers and six crew … reporting injuries after the aircraft experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey."
All passengers were assessed for injuries on board, with eight subsequently taken to the hospital for further medical attention.
Passengers onboard described the turbulence as a chaotic experience. One passenger, Paul Mocc, told Irish broadcaster RTE, "I saw people hitting the roof and food and drink flying everywhere."
Another passenger, Emma Rose Power, explained the scene: "Some of the flight attendants I saw had scratches on their faces, they had ice on their faces. There was one girl that had a sling on her arm.”
Qatar Airways confirmed the incident, acknowledging that "a small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in flight and are now receiving medical attention." The airline added, "the matter is now subject to an internal investigation."
This turbulence incident follows a similar event five days earlier when a British man died of a suspected heart attack, and several passengers got injuries on a Singapore Airlines flight from London due to severe turbulence.
While turbulence-related fatalities remain rare, injuries are a growing concern. Some experts suggest a potential link between increasing reports of turbulence and the effects of climate change on weather patterns.
