Best time to sail Alaska
The Alaska cruise season runs from late April through September, with a few sailings into early October. May and early June bring long days, snow-capped scenery, fewer crowds and the driest weather in Southeast Alaska; wildflowers and bear sightings increase as June progresses. Late June through August is peak season, with the warmest temperatures in the 60s Fahrenheit, the most daylight, salmon runs, whales in full numbers, and the highest demand for cabins and cruisetours. September offers autumn colors, northern lights possibilities on clear nights and easier availability, though rain is more frequent and some tours wind down. Our experts often recommend late May, early June or the first half of September for the best balance of scenery, wildlife and value.
Ships, cabins and itineraries
There are two classic itineraries. Round-trip Inside Passage cruises of 7 nights sail from Seattle or Vancouver, visit three or four ports and include a glacier day, with sea days at each end. One-way Gulf of Alaska cruises of 7 nights sail between Vancouver and Whittier or Seward near Anchorage, adding Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord and making Denali cruisetours possible. Longer 10- to 14-night voyages sail from San Francisco or Los Angeles. Cabin choice matters more in Alaska than in the Caribbean: interior cabins are the most affordable, oceanview cabins give you scenery from your bed, balcony cabins are the favorite for glacier days and whale watching in private, and suites add space and concierge service.

Departure ports and getting to the ship
Seattle and Vancouver are the main Alaska home ports, with one-way cruises ending or starting at Whittier or Seward, both a 2- to 3-hour transfer from Anchorage. Flights to Seattle take roughly 2 to 6 hours from most US cities, and Vancouver is a short hop beyond. We always book you in the day before sailing. Because Vancouver departures start in Canada, and because most Seattle round-trips call in Canada, a valid passport is required or strongly recommended for every Alaska cruise; closed-loop rules that allow a birth certificate and photo ID apply only to some Seattle round-trips, and a passport is still needed to fly home from Canada in an emergency, so verify requirements before travel. US dollars and English are used throughout Alaska, Canadian dollars in Vancouver and Victoria, and Alaska is one hour behind Pacific time.
