Best time to sail
Full transits are concentrated in spring, roughly March through May, and fall, roughly September through November, when ships reposition between Caribbean and Alaska or West Coast seasons. Partial transits from Florida run mainly from October through April. Panama sits near the equator, so expect heat and humidity in the mid to high 80s Fahrenheit year-round. The dry season runs from mid-December to April with sunny skies and light winds; the wet season from May to November brings afternoon downpours that usually clear quickly. Hurricane season affects the Caribbean portion of itineraries from June through November, though the Canal zone itself lies south of the main storm track.
Ships, cabins and itineraries
Full ocean-to-ocean transits typically run 10 to 21 nights, sailing between Florida and Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco, sometimes continuing to Vancouver. Partial transits are usually 10 or 11 nights round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Miami or Tampa. Larger mainstream ships now use the newer, wider locks; premium and mid-size ships often use the original lock chambers, where the ship clears the walls by only a couple of feet.
