The best time to visit Spain is April through early June and mid-September through October, when the cities are comfortably warm, the sea is still swimmable at the tail end, and crowds and hotel rates sit well below their summer peak. Summer is fine for the beaches and the north but punishing in Madrid and Andalusia. Winter is mild in the south and a genuine value in the cities. Here is how each season plays out.
Spring (March to May): festivals and the sweet spot
Spring is when Spain is at its most Spanish. Semana Santa (Holy Week, the week before Easter) fills Seville, Málaga and Granada with processions; two weeks later Seville's Feria de Abril takes over the city with flamenco dresses and horse carriages. Both are unforgettable and both make hotel rooms scarce, so book early or come the week after. Elsewhere, March is still cool and can be wet in the north and in Madrid, April is pleasant almost everywhere, and May is close to ideal: warm days in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, wildflowers in the countryside, and the sea just starting to tempt on the Costa del Sol.
Summer (June to August): coast yes, interior with care
Summer is peak season for the beaches: the Costa Brava, Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Mallorca and Ibiza are sunny, crowded and busy from late June through August. The north coast (San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Galicia) is the best summer choice for anyone who dislikes heat, with warm rather than hot days and a cooler sea. Inland is a different story. Madrid, Seville, Córdoba and Toledo regularly see afternoons in the high 90s and beyond, and locals structure the day around it: early mornings, a long indoor lunch, and dinner after 9 pm. If summer is your only window, base on the coast or in the north and take the cities in the early morning and evening. July also brings the San Fermín festival in Pamplona, and late August brings La Tomatina in Buñol near Valencia.
Fall (September to November): October is the value pick
September on the coast is arguably better than August: the water is at its warmest, the crowds thin after the first week, and hotel rates ease. Barcelona's La Mercè festival in late September is a bonus. October is our pick for a city-focused trip: Madrid, Seville and Granada are warm without being hot, the Alhambra and Prado lines shorten, and shoulder-season pricing kicks in. November turns cooler and wetter, especially in the north and in Barcelona, but Andalusia stays mild and the cities feel local again.
Winter (December to February): mild south, quiet cities, Canary sun
Spanish winters are milder than most Americans expect. Seville and Málaga see plenty of sunny days in the 60s, and Madrid is cold and crisp but rarely snowy. Christmas markets, the Three Kings parades on January 5 and the January sales give the cities a festive feel, and hotel value from mid-January through February is the strongest of the year. The Canary Islands are the true winter-sun option, with spring-like weather year-round and a short flight from the mainland. The north can be gray and rainy, and mountain areas such as the Sierra Nevada open for skiing.

Barcelona: April to June and September to October. Madrid: April to May and September to October; avoid July and August unless you love heat. Andalusia (Seville, Granada, Córdoba): March to May and October to November, with winter a close second. The Mediterranean coast and the islands: June and September for warm sea and fewer people. The north (Basque Country, Galicia): June to September. Canary Islands: any month, with December to March the most popular for escaping the cold.
Passports and entry
