The setting and the water
The Maldives is a chain of more than a thousand tiny coral islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean. Most resorts occupy an entire island, so your world is a ring of white sand, a house reef you can snorkel from your deck, and open ocean. Bora Bora is a volcanic island in French Polynesia, ringed by a turquoise lagoon and a string of small motu islets where the resorts sit. Everywhere you look is Mount Otemanu rising above the lagoon. If you want a backdrop, Bora Bora wins outright. If you want to be surrounded by reef life, the Maldives generally has the richer snorkeling straight off the villa, plus manta rays and whale sharks in the right season and atoll.
Getting there from the US
This is the biggest practical difference. Bora Bora is reached via Tahiti: nonstop flights from the West Coast to Papeete take about 8 hours, followed by a roughly 50-minute flight to Bora Bora and a boat transfer to your resort. The Maldives is close to the opposite side of the world: expect 20 to 24 hours or more via a Middle East, European or Asian hub into Malé. From Malé, resorts are reached by speedboat (nearby atolls), seaplane (usually 20 to 45 minutes, daylight hours only) or a domestic flight plus boat for the far atolls. Seaplane transfers are scenic but require a daylight arrival in Malé; late-night landings often mean an overnight near the airport.
Best time to go
The Maldives' dry season runs November to April, with the calmest seas and clearest water; May to October is the southwest monsoon, wetter and windier but still warm, with quieter resorts and strong manta activity on the western side of the atolls. Bora Bora's dry season is May to October, with cooler, drier trade-wind weather; November to April is warmer and more humid with more rain, though showers are usually brief. Their peak seasons are near opposites, which may settle the choice by your dates alone.
Cost tier and resort choice
Both are luxury destinations, and both charge for their isolation. Bora Bora has a small number of resorts, nearly all in the upper-luxury tier, and there is little in between. The Maldives has more than 150 resorts at every level from stylish mid-range to the most exclusive private islands anywhere, plus guesthouses on local islands for travelers who want a simpler stay.
