Choose Phuket if you want the widest choice of resorts, direct international flights, nightlife and plenty to do off the beach. Choose Krabi if you want dramatic limestone scenery, quieter beaches and a slower pace, and you don't mind an extra connection. Both sit on Thailand's Andaman coast with the same seasons, and they are close enough to combine in one trip.
Beaches and scenery
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, with a long west coast of sandy bays. Patong is the busy hub; Karon and Kata are wide, family-friendly stretches; Surin, Bang Tao and Kamala to the north are calmer and home to the more upscale resorts; The beaches are good, but the backdrop is hills and development rather than wild nature. Krabi is a mainland province where sheer limestone karsts rise straight out of the sea. Ao Nang is the main beach town and the base for boat trips. Railay, reachable only by longtail boat, has some of the most photographed beaches in Thailand and world-class rock climbing. Offshore, Koh Lanta offers long, quiet beaches and a laid-back island feel, and the Phi Phi islands sit roughly between the two destinations. On pure scenery, Krabi wins.
Vibe and things to do
Phuket has an "everything" quality: Old Town's Sino-Portuguese shophouses and cafes, the Big Buddha, ethical elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes, beach clubs, golf, and a nightlife scene in Patong that ranges from family shows to late-night bars. Day trips reach Phang Nga Bay's sea caves and the Similan Islands (open roughly mid-October to mid-May). Krabi is quieter and more outdoorsy: kayaking through mangroves, the Four Islands boat tour, climbing at Railay, hot springs and the Emerald Pool inland, and sunset drinks in Ao Nang. If you get restless on a beach, Phuket is the safer pick; if a beach and a boat are the whole point, Krabi.
Cost tier
Both destinations cover the full range from simple guesthouses to five-star resorts. Phuket has more luxury resorts and more options at every level. Krabi's resort selection is smaller, though Ao Nang and Railay have excellent boutique and upscale properties. Overall, a comparable resort stay tends to land in a similar tier in both places, with Phuket offering more at the top end and Krabi more in the mid-range. Call for current pricing on your dates.
Families vs couples and honeymooners
Families usually do well in Phuket: Kata, Karon and the Bang Tao area have big resort pools, kids' clubs, calm water in the dry season and easy access to attractions. Krabi works for families who are happy with boat days and nature, especially in Ao Nang, though Railay's boat-only access can be awkward with strollers and small children. Couples and honeymooners often prefer Krabi's scenery and quiet, or Phuket's northern beaches (Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Nai Thon), which are peaceful while keeping Phuket's convenience.
Getting there and around
From the US there are no nonstop flights to either; you will connect through an Asian hub, and often through Bangkok. Phuket's airport handles many international routes, so you can frequently fly in without touching Bangkok. Krabi's airport is smaller, mainly domestic and regional, so most US travelers connect via Bangkok. By road, Phuket to Ao Nang is about 3 hours; by ferry via Phi Phi it is a scenic half day. The Andaman coast's best season is November to April: dry, sunny, calm seas. May to October is the monsoon, with rougher water and some boat trips cancelled, though rain often comes in short bursts and hotels are much quieter. US citizens are generally allowed short tourist stays in Thailand without a visa, but entry rules change, so ask us about current requirements.

First-time visitors to Thailand, families with young children, and anyone who wants nightlife and variety: Phuket. Couples, nature lovers, climbers and travelers who have already done the busy beaches: Krabi. With 8 or more nights, do both: fly into Phuket for a few nights on the northern beaches, then transfer by road or boat to Ao Nang or Railay for the scenery.
