Thailand sits at the heart of Southeast Asia, with a bustling capital on the Chao Phraya River, temple-studded mountains in the north and two coastlines of limestone islands and white-sand bays. It is famous for its food, its warmth toward visitors and its value. Thai is the language, English is widely spoken in tourism, and the currency is the baht (THB).

Why Thailand for your vacation

Thailand delivers three vacations in one. Bangkok dazzles with the gilded Grand Palace, the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, rooftop bars and some of the best street food on Earth. Chiang Mai in the north offers hilltop temples, night markets, cooking classes and elephant sanctuaries set among misty mountains. Then the beaches: Phuket's west-coast bays and nightlife, Krabi's Railay cliffs and the Phi Phi islands, Koh Samui's palm-lined shores and the jade-green waters of Phang Nga Bay. Resorts here offer a level of service and space that is hard to match elsewhere, and short domestic flights connect every region. Thailand also pairs easily with Singapore, Vietnam or Bali.

What's included in a Thailand package

Every package is tailored, but a typical Thailand itinerary includes:

  • Round-trip flights on major airlines with one connection through an Asian, Gulf or European hub to Bangkok
  • Hotels and resorts from well-known brands and independent properties: a riverside or downtown hotel in Bangkok, an optional stay in Chiang Mai, and a beach resort or pool villa in Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui
  • Domestic flights between regions, with private airport, hotel and pier transfers
  • Optional experiences: a Grand Palace and temples tour, a Chao Phraya dinner cruise, a floating-market morning, a Thai cooking class, an ethical elephant sanctuary visit, and a speedboat day to Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay
  • Breakfast included at most hotels, with half-board and all-inclusive plans at selected beach resorts
  • Travel protection and a single US-based point of contact throughout

Rates depend on season, resort level and the number of regions, so call for current pricing on your dates.

Best time to visit Thailand

Thailand is tropical and warm year-round, but timing matters by coast. The cool, dry season from November through February is ideal almost everywhere, with Bangkok highs in the upper 80s Fahrenheit, lower humidity and clear skies over the Andaman Sea. March through May is the hottest period, often above 95°F, brightened by the Songkran water festival in mid April. The rainy season on the Andaman coast, including Phuket and Krabi, runs from roughly May through October, with short heavy showers, rougher seas and lower resort occupancy. Koh Samui and the Gulf coast follow a different pattern, driest from February through June and wettest from October through December, so we steer beach stays to whichever coast suits your dates. Thailand is on UTC+7, 11 to 12 hours ahead of US Eastern Time.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

Thailand's accommodation ranges from lively beach hotels to secluded pool villas, and each area has a distinct mood.

  • Bangkok: riverside luxury hotels on the Chao Phraya, or Sukhumvit and Silom towers close to the Skytrain, malls and nightlife
  • Chiang Mai: boutique hotels inside the old walled city, or riverside resorts with mountain views
  • Phuket: Patong for nightlife, Kata and Karon for family beaches, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao for quieter luxury resorts
  • Krabi: Ao Nang for convenience, Railay for cliff-backed beach bungalows reached by longtail boat
  • Koh Samui: Chaweng for energy, Lamai and Bophut for relaxed resorts, the north coast for villas
  • Khao Lak and Khao Sok: quiet beach resorts and floating jungle lodges for nature lovers

Things to do in Thailand

  • Tour the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, then cruise the Chao Phraya at dinner
  • Browse Chatuchak weekend market and eat street food in Chinatown's Yaowarat Road
  • Take a day trip to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya or the floating markets
  • Climb to Doi Suthep temple above Chiang Mai and visit an ethical elephant sanctuary
  • Learn to cook pad thai and green curry in a Thai cooking class
  • Speedboat to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts or Krabi's Four Islands
  • Kayak through sea caves, snorkel coral reefs or take a Thai massage on the beach

Getting there from the US

There are no regular nonstop flights between the US and Thailand, so your package flights connect once through an Asian, Gulf or European hub to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, or directly into Phuket on some routings. Total travel time is roughly 17 to 20 hours from West Coast gateways such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, and roughly 20 to 24 hours from East Coast cities including New York and Washington. US passport holders can currently enter Thailand without a visa for tourist stays of up to 60 days, with a passport valid for six months, but rules change, so verify entry requirements before travel. Domestic flights from Bangkok to Phuket, Krabi, Samui or Chiang Mai take about an hour.

Most travelers choose breakfast included, because Thai restaurants and street food are affordable and excellent. All-inclusive suits families at secluded resorts in Khao Lak or Koh Samui where dining options outside the property are limited.

Yes. Children love calm beaches, resort pools and kids' clubs, longtail boat rides, ethical elephant sanctuaries and mild dishes like fried rice and satay. Bangkok's traffic and heat call for short, well-paced days.

Thailand is popular with seniors for its warm service, spa culture and value. Temple visits involve some steps and heat, so we plan early starts, private transfers and resorts with elevators and easy beach access.

Thailand is generally safe, with low violent crime in tourist areas. Use licensed transport, be cautious on motorbikes and with strong currents in the rainy season, and follow local etiquette at temples and around the monarchy.

Thailand uses the baht, and cards work in hotels and malls, though cash is needed at markets and small restaurants. Tipping is modest: rounding up bills, small notes for porters and drivers, and a little more for spa staff and guides.

Book four to six months ahead for December through February and the Christmas holidays, when top beach resorts and pool villas sell out. Shoulder-season trips can often be arranged six to eight weeks out.
