Beaches
Negril wins this category outright. Seven Mile Beach is a long, gently curving sweep of soft white sand with calm, shallow, swimmable water, and because it faces west, every evening ends with a sunset straight off the beach. South of the beach, the West End trades sand for limestone cliffs, where you swim from ladders and platforms into deep, clear water. Montego Bay's beaches are smaller and more segmented: Doctor's Cave Beach is the famous one, a pretty crescent with clear water, and most resorts have their own private cove. The sand is fine, but the sea can be rockier and the shoreline less continuous. If a long barefoot walk on the beach is your idea of a vacation, choose Negril.
Vibe
Montego Bay is Jamaica's tourism capital and it feels like it. The Hip Strip has bars, restaurants, and shops within walking distance of several hotels, and the area east toward Rose Hall is lined with large, polished all-inclusive resorts, golf courses, and a great house or two to tour. It is busy, easy, and well organized. Negril is slower and more bohemian. Beach bars spill onto the sand, reggae drifts out of open-air restaurants, and the cliffside spots on the West End are where you go for sunset drinks and cliff jumping. Negril still has big all-inclusives at the north end of the beach, but the character of the town is small hotels, beachfront cottages, and boutique resorts. Nightlife exists in both, but Montego Bay's is more nightclub and Negril's is more beach bonfire and live band.
Cost tier
Both areas span the full range, but they lean differently. Montego Bay has more luxury and upscale resort inventory, more brand-name adults-only properties, and more high-end villas around Rose Hall. Negril has more small and mid-range options, including charming beachfront guesthouses that are hard to find in Montego Bay, alongside a handful of well-known all-inclusives. Because Montego Bay is right next to the airport, transfers are short and inexpensive, while Negril adds a longer transfer to the total. For couples and honeymooners, Negril is the stronger pick: sunsets, cliffside dining, and a slower pace that makes a week feel like a real escape. Getting there
Both areas use Montego Bay's international airport, the main gateway for US flights. Montego Bay resorts are typically 10 to 30 minutes from the terminal. Negril is about an hour and a half to two hours by road along the coast, depending on traffic and where on the beach you are staying. That drive is scenic and easy with a pre-arranged transfer, which we include in most packages, but it is worth factoring in for a short trip. For a four-night getaway, Montego Bay makes the most of your time; for a week or more, Negril's transfer is a small price for the beach.
