American Airlines Name Change and Correction Rules 2026

Call now +1 (323) 800 6001 - a travel expert files your American Airlines name correction for you, 24/7.

Quick answer: American Airlines corrects names so the ticket matches your government ID - typos, married or maiden names, inverted first and last names, a missing second surname - but never transfers a ticket to a different person. Corrections can't be made on aa.com and aren't accepted within 24 hours of departure; they go through Reservations. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 and we file it.

Correction vs. change: the distinction that decides everything

American's published guidelines draw a hard line. A name correction fixes the name on a ticket so it matches TSA-required documents: a misspelling, a married, maiden or divorced surname, a legal name, a secondary last name, or first and last names entered in the wrong order. The passenger, their date of birth and gender stay exactly as ticketed. A name change means putting a different person on the ticket, and American states plainly that this is not allowed. If you can't travel, the options are cancelling for a Trip Credit or changing the dates for yourself, not handing the seat to a friend.

How to request an American Airlines name correction

You can't edit a passenger name in Your trips on aa.com; the site lets you change flights, seats and bags but the name field is locked once the ticket is issued. American handles corrections through Reservations, and its agency guidelines describe the same two paths an agent uses:

  1. Minor corrections on American-only itineraries. The agent fixes the name inside the existing reservation and reissues the ticket. Your confirmation code doesn't change and your seats stay put.
  2. Major corrections. If any flight is a codeshare or operated by another airline, or the ticket was booked in "R" inventory, American's and the partner's systems won't accept a name edit in place. A new reservation is created with the correct name, the original is cancelled, and the ticket is reissued. Because it's a new booking, the current fare applies, so a correction on a partner itinerary can cost more than a typo fix on a domestic one.

American does not publish a customer-facing fee for name corrections, but a fare difference can apply whenever a new ticket must be issued. Have the confirmation code, the exact name on the ID and, for legal name changes, the supporting document ready before you call. If you booked with Fond Travels, or would rather not queue, call +1 (323) 800 6001 and we file the correction with American on your behalf.

Names that don't need correcting

Not every mismatch is a problem. TSA's Secure Flight rules accept small differences between a boarding pass and an ID: a missing middle name, a middle initial instead of the full middle name, and hyphens or apostrophes dropped because airline systems can't print them. American's own name-entry guidance strips those characters anyway. What must match is the first and last name as spelled on your government ID, plus your date of birth and gender in Secure Flight data. If the only issue is a middle name, you can usually fly as ticketed; if you're unsure, the cost of asking is one phone call.

Timing: why the 24-hour rule matters

American won't process corrections once a flight is within 24 hours of departure, because the reservation may already be under airport control. If you notice the error the night before, go to the airport early and explain the mismatch at the ticket counter; agents can often annotate the record, but they can't reissue a ticket that has already been cleared for departure. For anything found more than a day out, deal with it immediately: a minor correction takes minutes, and a major one on a partner itinerary is easier before seats sell out at the new fare.

AAdvantage account name vs. ticket name

A ticket name correction doesn't update your AAdvantage profile, and vice versa. If you changed your name legally, update the account through AAdvantage customer service with documentation so future bookings pull the correct name and miles post properly. Booking with a profile that still shows a maiden name is the single most common cause of the married-name correction requests we handle.

How Fond Travels helps

Fond Travels is a US call-to-book travel agency rated 4.8/5 on 2,200+ Google reviews. Name corrections are exactly the kind of change an airline website can't do and a phone call can. American Airlines name change FAQs

Can I change the name on an American Airlines ticket to someone else?

No. American does not allow a ticket to be transferred to another person. It allows corrections only, so the name matches the original traveler's government ID.

Can I fix a misspelled name on aa.com?

No. Passenger names are locked in Your trips once the ticket is issued. Corrections go through American Reservations; Fond Travels can file it for you at +1 (323) 800 6001.

Does American Airlines charge for a name correction?

American doesn't publish a customer-facing correction fee. A fare difference can apply when a new ticket has to be issued, which happens on codeshare, partner-airline and "R" inventory itineraries.

Can I correct my name after marriage or divorce?

Yes. Married, maiden and divorced surnames are listed among American's permitted corrections. Have the marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order available in case documentation is requested.

What if my first and last names are reversed?

That's a minor correction on American-only itineraries and is fixed inside the same reservation. On tickets with partner flights it becomes a major correction with a new reservation.

How close to departure can a name be corrected?

Not within 24 hours of departure. Inside that window the flight may be under airport control, so speak to the airport agent instead.

Does a missing middle name matter?

Usually not. TSA accepts a missing middle name or an initial as long as the first and last names, date of birth and gender match your ID. Hyphens and apostrophes are dropped by airline systems and are fine.

Can Fond Travels handle my American Airlines name correction?

Yes. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 any time with your confirmation code and the exact name on your ID. We determine whether it's a minor or major correction, tell you if repricing applies, and file it with American.
