Booking a Flight for Your Parents from India to the USA

Talk to a travel expert - call +1 (323) 800 6001, 24/7.
Real people, no bots. You do not need your parents on the phone. Tell us their details and we compare the routings, book the ticket and email it to you and to them.

Book the flight after the visa is in the passport, not before. Until then, hold the dates loosely. A return ticket is not a legal condition of entry for an Indian passport holder on a visitor visa, and the visa date is not the date that decides how long your parents may stay. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 and a travel expert will work through the whole sequence with you.

Most families who call us have already read six contradictory forum threads. This page sets out the order things actually happen in, what the paperwork does and does not do, and the few decisions worth real thought. We book the flights. We are a travel agency, not immigration advisers, so every rule below points at the government source that states it.

The whole thing, in order

A parent's visit to the United States has six steps, and only one is buying a ticket.

  1. Decide roughly when and for how long. A season, not a date.
  2. They apply for the visitor visa in India: online form, fee, appointment request.
  3. They attend the appointment and give biometrics where required.
  4. The passport comes back with the visa in it, or it does not. Nothing before this is certain.
  5. Now the flight is booked, against the passport that carries the visa.
  6. They fly, and are inspected on arrival. The officer decides the admission period.

Families get into trouble by compressing steps two to five. Appointment waits at some posts have been long and vary by post and season, so a ticket bought in hope usually has to be changed. Fees change too, so read the current official fee schedule.

The timeline, stage by stage

The same sequence, with the ticket decision attached to each stage. Nobody writes this part down.

Everything before the visa is guesswork. Everything after it is ours to get right. See our international travel reservations.

What a visitor visa is, and what it is not

This misunderstanding sits under almost every anxious question we are asked.

  • A B-1/B-2 visitor visa is permission to travel to a US port of entry and ask to be let in. That is its whole legal job. It is not an entry permit.
  • It does not decide how long your parents may stay. A Customs and Border Protection officer decides that on the day.
  • Every arriving traveler is subject to inspection. That is ordinary.
  • The visa expiry date is a travel deadline, not a stay deadline. It is the last day they may present themselves for entry, not the last day they may be in the country.

We will not tell you what an officer will decide, and be wary of any page that does.

The return ticket question, answered properly

The most argued-about point in every forum thread, and the answer is clearer than the threads suggest.

  • A return or onward ticket is not legally required to enter the United States on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa.
  • The requirement people mean belongs to the Visa Waiver Program and ESTA, which Indian passport holders do not use. They travel on a visa, so that rule does not apply.
  • A return ticket is evidence, not a condition. It is one ordinary way a traveler shows the visit is temporary.
  • An officer may still ask to see one, and an airline may ask at check-in, so carrying proof of onward travel is sensible even though no law requires it.

Our advice: book a real return on a fare that can be moved. Your parents have something to show, and you can change the date later. The longer read is on return ticket rules for US visitors.

The I-94, and why the visa date is not the date that matters

On admission an arrival record called an I-94 is created, carrying an "admit until" date. That date, not the visa sticker, controls how long they may remain.

  • A B-2 visitor found admissible is generally admitted for a minimum of six months by regulation, even where less was requested.
  • A visitor may be admitted for not more than one year, and extensions come in increments of not more than six months.
  • An extension is applied for from inside the United States, and the government advises applying at least 45 days before the authorized stay expires.
  • Overstaying is serious. Staying beyond the authorized period can bar a future return, which is why this date goes on the fridge.

Check the I-94 record online after arrival and read the admit until date yourselves. If it differs from what you expected, that is still the number that counts.

Immigration rules change, and only the US government can state them. Check the current guidance on the official US State Department and Customs and Border Protection websites before you book, and read the current US State Department travel advisory for every country on the itinerary. We are a travel agency, not immigration advisers, and nothing here is legal advice.

Choosing dates, and how much flexibility to buy

The real decision is not which flight. It is how much uncertainty you pay to absorb.

  • Buy the flexibility at the start. The fare that costs least to move is usually the flexible one bought up front, not a restricted fare rescued afterwards.
  • Leave room after the visa. Allow a fortnight between the passport coming back and departure.
  • Pick the return date generously. A six-month admission is common, so a return booked three weeks out often gets moved. Book the date you mean and keep the ability to move it.
  • Watch the season at both ends. Peak travel out of India and US holiday weeks both tighten availability.

When several relatives come at once, tell us early and we hold the party together across the connections. See family travel reservations.

Passports, transit and the airline counter

Most journeys that go wrong go wrong at the departure airport, not the US border. Airlines check documents before boarding and can refuse to carry anyone who appears inadmissible.

  • Passport validity. Indian passport holders are on the published list of nationalities exempt from the six months beyond stay rule, so the passport need only be valid for the intended stay. We still advise plenty of validity, because a six-month admission is common.
  • A damaged passport can end a journey at check-in. A water-stained page or loose cover is worth replacing.
  • Airside transit through the Schengen countries, such as Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam, needs no airport transit visa for an Indian passport holder who stays airside.
  • London Heathrow. Indian passport holders are normally on the UK direct airside transit visa list, but a valid US visa exempts them for airside transit. If the itinerary crosses UK border control, or involves an overnight, different rules apply.
  • Every other connecting point has its own rules, so we confirm them for the precise routing before booking. For a larger party, see group travel flights.

Since 26 December 2025 US authorities may photograph travelers on both entry and exit at any airport, and earlier age exemptions were removed, so older travelers are now included. Rollout is phased. There is no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirement for entry.

Health cover: the paragraph on this page worth reading twice

Travel medical insurance is not required for a visitor. That is why families skip it, and it is the most expensive assumption on this page.

  • A visiting parent cannot be covered by Medicare. Medicare is for people who qualify for it, and a visitor does not.
  • Your own Medicare does not extend to a visiting parent. It is not a family policy.
  • Your employer health plan will almost never cover a visiting parent. Check the wording rather than assuming.
  • An uninsured visitor is billed at full rates. US hospitals bill uninsured patients directly, and one episode during a long visit can be ruinous for a family.

This is general information, not a recommendation of any policy or insurer, and we do not sell insurance. Look into visitor medical cover before they fly, read what it excludes, and check how pre-existing conditions are treated.

Assistance, seats, meals and medicines

All of this is requested when the ticket is issued. A request made later does not always reach every airline on the journey.

  • Airport assistance is provided at no charge on flights to and from the United States, and asking does not mean your parent cannot walk. It covers the long distances between check-in, security and a connecting gate. See wheelchair assistance on international flights.
  • Seats matter more than families expect. An aisle seat near a lavatory, as far forward as the fare allows, changes a long flight for an older traveler.
  • Special meals, vegetarian, Jain, Hindu, halal, diabetic and low-salt, are requested with the booking and need 24 to 48 hours of notice.
  • Medicines travel in hand luggage, in original boxes, with a copy of the prescription.
  • Medical equipment such as an oxygen concentrator or a CPAP machine has its own airline approval process, measured in days. Tell us at the start.

On a long overnight sector a flat bed is worth pricing rather than dismissing. We quote business class beside the economy fare.

What we do when you call

You do not need your parents on the phone, and you do not need to have decided anything yet.

  • We work backwards from the visa. Tell us where the application has got to and we say whether it is time to book or time to wait.
  • We compare routings for the traveler, not the fare. Connection length, terminal changes and time of day matter more at seventy than at thirty. See choosing a connection for elderly parents.
  • We price flexibility openly, so you see what a movable return costs first.

What we will not do is predict the border, or advise on a visa application. Those are government decisions and we are a travel agency, not immigration advisers. Our job is to make the ticket fit the rules you are given.

How booking by phone works

  1. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 at any hour and speak to a travel expert.
  2. Give us the details: the traveler's full name exactly as printed in the passport, date of birth, passport number and expiry, the home city, the US city and the dates that would suit.
  3. Hear the realistic options: the routings, the total, the cabin, the connection times and the change and refund rules, explained before anything is booked.
  4. We book it and email everything to you and to the traveler, request the assistance and meals, and stay reachable 24/7 while they travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A return or onward ticket is not a legal condition of entry on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa. That requirement belongs to the Visa Waiver Program and ESTA, which Indian passport holders do not use. A return ticket is evidence that the visit is temporary, not a legal condition, and an officer or an airline may still ask to see one.

After. Nothing is certain until the passport comes back with the visa in it, and appointment waits vary a great deal by post and by season. Call us at any stage to hear what routings and fares look like in the season you want, and we will tell you honestly whether it is time to book or time to wait.

The visa does not decide that. A Customs and Border Protection officer decides the admission period on arrival, and the I-94 admit until date is what legally controls the stay. By regulation a visitor found admissible is generally admitted for a minimum of six months, and for not more than one year. Check the I-94 record after arrival.

No, and this confusion causes real trouble. The visa expiry date is the last day they may travel to a port of entry and ask to be admitted. The I-94 admit until date, created when they are admitted, is the date that controls how long they may remain. They are two different things with two different dates.

An extension is applied for from inside the United States, and extensions are granted in increments of not more than six months at a time. The government advises applying at least 45 days before the authorized stay expires. We are a travel agency and not immigration advisers, so check the current process on the official government website.

Overstaying the authorized period is serious and can bar a future return to the United States. This is why we tell every family to read the I-94 admit until date after arrival rather than assuming it matches the visa or the return ticket. If an extension is needed, it is applied for well before that date, not after it.

It is not required, but a visiting parent is effectively uninsured in the United States without it. Medicare does not cover a visitor, and your own Medicare does not extend to a visiting parent. US hospitals bill uninsured patients at full rates. Look into visitor medical cover before they fly. We do not sell insurance or recommend any policy.

Almost certainly not, and you should check the actual wording of your plan rather than assume. Medicare does not extend to a visiting relative, and most employer plans do not cover a visitor on a B-1/B-2 visa. This is general information, not insurance advice. Look into visitor medical cover and read carefully what it excludes.

Indian passport holders are on the published list of nationalities exempt from the six months beyond stay rule for the United States, so the passport need only be valid for the intended period of stay. Even so, we advise plenty of validity, because a six month admission is common and a damaged passport can end a journey at check-in.

It depends entirely on the routing. Airside transit through the Schengen countries does not require an airport transit visa for an Indian passport holder. For London Heathrow, a valid US visa exempts them from needing one for airside transit. Other points have their own rules, so we confirm the exact itinerary before booking.

No. There is no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirement for entry to the United States. Separately, since 26 December 2025 US authorities may photograph travelers on both entry and exit at any airport, and earlier age exemptions were removed, so older travelers are now included. That rollout is phased.

Yes, and we request both when the ticket is issued so they sit on every leg of the journey. Airport assistance is provided at no charge on flights to and from the United States, and asking for it does not mean she cannot walk. Special meals usually need 24 to 48 hours of notice before departure.
