Should You Book Flight and Hotel Together or Separately?

Talk to a travel expert - call +1 (323) 800 6001, 24/7.
Real people, no bots. You do not need your parents on the phone. Tell us their details and we compare the routings, book the ticket and email it to you and to them.

Booking them together usually means one payment, one itinerary and one number to call when something goes wrong. Buying them apart gives you full control over each piece, which matters if your plans are unusual. Neither is right for every trip, and the honest answer depends on how far you are going and how much room you have to absorb a problem. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 and we will tell you which one fits.

This is the question we are asked most often, and the answer people expect is a rule. There is no rule. What there is instead is a short list of things that genuinely change depending on how you buy, and once you know what those are the choice usually makes itself. This page sets them out plainly, including the cases where buying separately is the better idea and we say so.

What booking them together actually means

The phrase covers two quite different arrangements, and people are often surprised by which one they have bought.

  • A single package. The flight and the accommodation are sold to you as one product, on one confirmation, under one set of terms. If one part fails, the seller is responsible for putting it right, because you bought one thing rather than two.
  • Two bookings made at the same time. A website shows them on one screen and takes one payment, but issues two separate confirmations under two sets of terms. This looks identical at checkout and behaves completely differently afterwards.

The difference only shows up on the day something goes wrong, which is precisely when nobody wants to be reading terms. When you book with us by phone we tell you which of the two you are buying before you agree to anything, because it is the single most consequential thing about the booking and it is almost never made clear online.

When booking them together works better

There are trips where the joined-up version is straightforwardly the better buy, and they have a pattern.

  • You are going somewhere you do not know. Sorting out an airport transfer, a room and a return flight in a place you have never been, in a language you do not speak, is work. Buying it as one arrangement moves that work onto somebody else.
  • The trip has no slack in it. A week in the sun with fixed dates and no flexibility is exactly the case where one party being responsible for the whole thing is worth having.
  • You are traveling with children or older relatives. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to go wrong while you are managing other people.
  • You want one number to call. When a flight is cancelled at eleven at night, the difference between one call and three is not a small thing.
  • The accommodation is the point of the trip. Somewhere with its own beach, its own meals and its own schedule tends to be sold as part of a package, and buying it any other way is more effort for no gain.

When buying them separately works better

We would rather tell you this than sell you the wrong thing. Separate bookings are the better answer more often than most agencies admit.

  • Your dates are not settled. Two bookings can be changed independently. A package generally moves as one piece or not at all.
  • You are staying with family for part of the trip. If you only need a room for three nights of a two-week visit, a package built around a full stay does not fit.
  • You are traveling one way, or on an open return. Packages are built around a return trip of a set length.
  • You want a specific cabin on a specific routing. If the flight matters more than the room, buy the flight on its own merits and sort the room afterwards.
  • You are going somewhere without much packaged accommodation. Plenty of places simply are not sold that way, and trying to force it produces a worse trip.
  • You are using airline credit or a voucher. Those generally cannot be applied to a package.

If your trip is on that list, we will book the pieces separately and say why. A package you had to bend your plans around is not a good outcome, whatever it costs.

The part that really matters: what happens when a flight is late

Everything above is convenience. This is the part with consequences, and it is the reason the question is worth asking at all.

Suppose your outbound flight is cancelled and you arrive a day late. If you bought one package, the accommodation is part of the same arrangement, and the seller is the one who has to sort out the night you missed and the transfer that no longer works. If you bought two things, you have a flight problem and, separately, a room you did not use and generally still owe for. The airline has no interest in the room and the property has no interest in the flight.

The same logic runs the other way. If a property closes or a booking falls through, a package seller has to find you somewhere else. Booked separately, you keep a flight to a place you can no longer stay in.

How far that protection extends depends on who sold it and under what terms, and it varies more than people expect. That is a question to ask out loud before booking, and it is one we answer on the phone for the specific trip in front of us rather than in general.

Questions worth asking before you agree to anything

Whoever you book with, and whether or not that is us, these are the questions that decide whether you are happy in six weeks.

  • Is this one arrangement or two? Ask it directly. The answer determines everything else on this list.
  • What happens if my outbound flight does not operate? Ask what is covered and who arranges it.
  • Can I move the dates, and what does that involve? Ask about both parts if there are two.
  • What is the total, including every charge that will appear? Ask for the number you will actually pay.
  • Who do I call at two in the morning? Ask whether it is a person and whether they are reachable from abroad.
  • What is not included? Transfers, resort charges, checked bags and seat selection are the usual gaps.

A seller who answers those six clearly is worth booking with. One who talks around them is telling you something.

How we work it out with you on the phone

We do not have a house preference. We ask four things and the answer falls out of them.

First, how fixed are your dates. Second, whether the accommodation is the point of the trip or somewhere to sleep. Third, whether anyone traveling needs assistance, has mobility limits or is very young. Fourth, how much disruption you could absorb without the trip being ruined.

A family of four with school dates, a week in one place and no flexibility is a package. Somebody visiting relatives for three weeks, staying with them for part of it and traveling on afterwards is not, and we will book that as separate pieces and explain each one. Most calls take under fifteen minutes and you are under no obligation at the end of them.

You can also send us the outline in writing and we will come back to you with both versions costed, so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it. Use our vacation request form and a travel expert will call you back.

How booking by phone works

  1. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 at any hour and speak to a travel expert.
  2. Give us the details: the traveler's full name exactly as printed in the passport, date of birth, passport number and expiry, the home city, the US city and the dates that would suit.
  3. Hear the realistic options: the routings, the total, the cabin, the connection times and the change and refund rules, explained before anything is booked.
  4. We book it and email everything to you and to the traveler, request the assistance and meals, and stay reachable 24/7 while they travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is better when your dates are fixed, the destination is unfamiliar, or you want one party responsible for the whole trip. It is worse when your plans are loose, when you are staying with family for part of the visit, or when you want a particular flight more than a particular room. We ask about your trip before recommending either, because the wrong one causes real difficulty later.

Not reliably. Sometimes a packaged arrangement reflects rates a property will not publish on its own, and sometimes buying the two pieces apart comes to less. It depends on the destination, the season and how far ahead you are booking. We quote both ways when it is close so you can see the actual numbers for your dates rather than rely on a general rule.

A package is one arrangement under one set of terms, so the seller is responsible if any part fails. Two bookings made at once are two separate contracts that merely shared a checkout screen. They look identical when you pay and behave very differently when a flight is cancelled. Ask which one you are buying before you agree to anything.

If both were part of one arrangement, the seller has to address the accommodation as well, because you bought a single product. If you booked them separately, the property has no obligation to the airline or to you over a missed flight, and the night is generally still payable. This difference is the strongest single argument for booking together on a trip with no slack.

Usually the whole trip moves together or not at all, and what that involves depends entirely on the terms you bought under. Separate bookings can each be changed on their own terms, which is more flexible but means dealing with two sets of rules. If you already know your dates might move, tell us at the start and we will factor it into the recommendation.

Almost certainly book the pieces separately. Packages are built around a continuous stay of a set length, so paying for accommodation you will not use makes no sense. We book the flights on their merits and arrange a room only for the nights you actually need one, which is usually both simpler and better suited to how the trip really runs.

Sometimes, and it is one of the most common misunderstandings. Some arrangements include an airport transfer and some do not, and whether they do is not always obvious at the point of sale. Ask directly, and ask what happens to the transfer if your flight arrives late. We confirm what is included in plain words before anything is booked.

Generally not. Credit from a cancelled flight normally has to be used with the airline that issued it, on a flight booked directly, and it usually cannot be applied to a packaged arrangement. If you are holding credit, tell us at the start of the call, because it often points the whole trip towards separate bookings rather than a package.

It is. If the accommodation becomes unavailable and it formed part of one arrangement, the seller has to find you somewhere else. Booked separately, you are left holding a flight to a place you can no longer stay in, and finding a replacement at short notice in a busy season is not always possible at any price.

Often, yes. Packaged arrangements draw on a narrower set of flights, so the routing, the timing and the cabin are more limited. If the flight itself matters to you, for a long journey or for somebody who needs a lie-flat seat, we would usually book the flight on its own merits first and arrange the accommodation around it afterwards.

For a first long trip to an unfamiliar country, we generally lean towards one arrangement. The value is not the price, it is that one party is responsible when something goes wrong and there is a single number to call. On a trip where you do not know the airport, the language or the roads, that is worth more than a wider choice of flights.

Yes, and we often do. If the two are close, we price the trip as one arrangement and as separate bookings and talk you through what each one means if your plans change or a flight is delayed. You are under no obligation either way. Call us, or send the outline through our request form and a travel expert will call you back.
