Best time to visit Belize

Belize has a subtropical climate with daytime highs in the low to high 80s Fahrenheit all year. The dry season runs from late November through May, with February through April the sunniest and most popular months; the cayes catch constant cooling trade winds. June through November is the wet season, with afternoon downpours, higher humidity and lush jungle; the heaviest rain falls in September and October. Hurricane season spans June through November with the highest risk in the fall, so we suggest travel protection then. Whale sharks gather off Placencia around the full moons of April through June, lobster season opens in mid-June with festivals on the cayes, and Belize stays on Central Standard Time all year with no daylight saving.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

Ambergris Caye, the largest island, has the widest range of resorts: beachfront hotels and condos north and south of the town of San Pedro, dive resorts, and private villas reached by golf cart or water taxi. Caye Caulker is smaller and more laid-back, with guesthouses and boutique hotels a short walk from the water taxi dock. Placencia, on the southern peninsula, offers the country's best mainland beaches, upscale resorts and easy access to whale-shark waters and the Cockscomb jaguar reserve. Hopkins is a Garifuna village with beach lodges and drumming culture. The Cayo District around San Ignacio holds jungle lodges on rivers and ridges, many with meals and guided tours included.
