Best time to visit the British Virgin Islands

The BVI have a warm tropical climate with daytime highs in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit all year. The dry season from December through April is peak season, with reliable trade winds that make it the best sailing period and the fullest social calendar, including the spring regatta in late March or early April. May and June are warm, quieter and still good for sailing. July through November is wetter, with short showers, and hurricane season runs June through November with the greatest risk from August to October; many resorts and charter companies close or reduce operations in September and October. The islands stay on Atlantic Standard Time year-round, one hour ahead of the East Coast in winter.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

On Tortola, Road Town has harbor hotels near the ferry docks and marinas, convenient for sailors and short stays. The north shore around Cane Garden Bay, Apple Bay and Long Bay has beachfront resorts, cottages and villas on calm, sunset-facing sand. On Virgin Gorda, the Valley near Spanish Town has resorts within walking distance of The Baths, while North Sound at the island's tip is a sheltered lagoon ringed by upscale resorts reached by boat, a favorite for honeymooners. Private-island resorts occupy several smaller cays and offer complete seclusion with meals included. Crewed catamaran charters, with a captain and cook, are a genuine alternative to a hotel and let you wake up at a different island each morning. True all-inclusives are rare; most stays are breakfast included, meal plan or room only.

There are few direct large-aircraft flights to the BVI, so most travelers fly nonstop to St. Thomas, roughly 3 hours from Miami, 4 hours from New York and 8 to 10 hours from the West Coast with one connection, then take a 45- to 60-minute ferry from Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook to West End or Road Town on Tortola. Alternatively, fly to San Juan and connect on a 35-minute regional flight to Beef Island airport on Tortola.
