St. Maarten is the smallest island in the world shared by two nations. The southern Dutch side, Sint Maarten, is home to the capital Philipsburg, the international airport and most of the resorts and casinos; the northern French side, Saint-Martin, offers gourmet dining in Grand Case, the long beach at Orient Bay and the market town of Marigot. Best time to visit St. Maarten

The island has a warm tropical climate with daytime highs in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit all year. The dry season from December through April is peak season, with steady trade winds, low humidity and the fullest events calendar, including the big international regatta in early March. May and June are quieter, warm and good value. July through November is the wetter season, with short showers and higher humidity; hurricane season runs June through November with the greatest risk from August to October, so we recommend travel protection then. The island stays on Atlantic Standard Time year-round, one hour ahead of the East Coast in winter and level with it in summer.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

On the Dutch side, Simpson Bay and Maho are the action zones, with large resorts, casinos, nightlife and the marina, all minutes from the airport. Philipsburg has hotels along Great Bay Beach and the boardwalk, handy for shopping and cruise-day energy. Dawn Beach and Oyster Pond on the east coast are calmer, with resorts on reef-protected water and sunrise views. Cupecoy and the Lowlands, on the border, hold upscale suites and cliffside villas. On the French side, Orient Bay is a lively beach village with small hotels and beach clubs; Grand Case offers boutique inns steps from the island's best restaurants; and Marigot has harbor hotels with a Mediterranean feel. All-inclusive resorts are mostly on the Dutch side, while the French side leans toward breakfast included and room only.
