Best time to visit the US Virgin Islands

The islands enjoy warm weather all year, with daytime highs between the low 80s and high 80s Fahrenheit. The dry season from December through April is the most popular time, with cooling trade winds and very little rain; expect the highest resort occupancy from Christmas through Easter. May and June are excellent shoulder months with warm seas and fewer visitors. The wet season runs from July through November, and hurricane season officially spans June through November with the greatest risk from August to October. We recommend travel protection for late-summer trips. The USVI stay on Atlantic Standard Time year-round, which matches Eastern Daylight Time in summer and is one hour ahead of the East Coast in winter.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

On St. Thomas, the East End near Red Hook has large beach resorts, condo complexes and easy ferry access to St. John. The South Shore, a short drive from town, offers all-inclusive style and family resorts close to Charlotte Amalie, while the North Side near Magens Bay has villas with sweeping views. St. John's Cruz Bay has small inns, villas and a handful of resorts within reach of the national park beaches; Coral Bay on the east side is rustic and very quiet. On St. Croix, Christiansted has harborfront hotels and boutique inns, the North Shore around Cane Bay suits divers, and the East End has upscale resorts on sheltered bays. Choose all-inclusive dining for simplicity, a condo for a kitchen, or room only if you plan to explore the islands' restaurants.

Getting there from the US

St. Thomas and St. Croix both receive nonstop flights from the mainland. Typical flight times are roughly 3 hours from Miami, 3.5 hours from Atlanta or Charlotte, 4 hours from New York, and 8 to 10 hours from the West Coast with one connection. St. John has no airport; you fly to St. Thomas and take a short taxi and ferry ride. US citizens do not need a passport, but must carry government-issued photo ID; a passport is strongly recommended and is required if you plan a day trip to the British Virgin Islands.
