Fare rules. Economy fares on long-haul routes range from restrictive light fares that exclude a checked bag and seat selection to flexible fares that allow changes. Change fees, if any, and fare differences vary by airline and route. We explain the rule for the fare you choose.

The 24-hour window. Under U.S. rules, most tickets bought at least seven days before departure can be cancelled within 24 hours for a refund.
