Fly Nonstop to DC: Alaska Airlines Connects San Diego and Washington

Alaska Airlines has announced a new nonstop route connecting San Diego International Airport (SAN) with Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). This groundbreaking service addresses a longstanding gap in the U.S. air travel network, as San Diego was previously the largest U.S. market without direct flights to Washington’s Reagan National. Approved by the U.S. DOT, the route marks a significant milestone for both cities.

Kimberly J. Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, expressed her satisfaction with the DOT's approval. She highlighted the route’s importance for key sectors like defense, biotech, and communications, which frequently require travel between San Diego and Washington, D.C. "This new service will enhance connectivity and provide significant benefits to our region," she stated.

The launch of this service was made possible by changes in federal regulations. The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, signed into law on May 16, allowed for expanded access to Reagan National Airport. Alaska Airlines secured approval to bypass the airport’s longstanding perimeter rule, which limits nonstop flights to destinations within 1,250 miles. This regulatory flexibility enabled the new route to proceed.

Alaska Airlines plans to offer roundtrip flights with schedules designed to accommodate business and leisure travelers. Flights from San Diego will depart at 8:30 a.m. PST, while departures from Washington, D.C., are set for 5:30 p.m. EST. Although the official start date for the route has not been announced, excitement is building among frequent travelers and industry stakeholders.

This new connection is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. It will strengthen ties between San Diego and Washington, D.C., particularly in the defense, biotech, and communications industries.
