The best time to visit Cabo San Lucas is November through May, when the days are dry, sunny, and warm without being oppressive. Whale season runs from roughly mid-December to mid-April and is the single best reason to pick a winter date. For value, look at late April through June and late October through early November. August and September are the hottest, most humid, and most storm-prone months.
Cabo's desert-meets-sea climate
Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Unlike the Caribbean, this is a desert climate: low humidity, very little rain for most of the year, cool nights in winter, and a short, sticky rainy season in late summer. The sun shines almost every day of the year. What varies is heat, sea temperature, and the risk of a late-summer tropical storm, so timing here is really about picking the level of warmth you want and whether whales are on your list.
Mid-December to April: whale season and peak crowds
Humpback and gray whales migrate to the warm waters off Baja each winter, and from mid-December to mid-April you can see them breaching from boats, from clifftop restaurants, and sometimes from your resort balcony. January and February are the heart of it. This is also Cabo's most popular stretch: the weather is dry and mild, with warm days and cool evenings that call for a light jacket. The sea is at its coolest in January and February, refreshing rather than bathwater. Christmas, New Year, and spring break in March are the busiest and most expensive weeks, and the marina and downtown fill with a lively crowd. Book early for winter, especially for beachfront rooms.
May and June: warm, dry, and quieter
Late spring is a sweet spot. Spring break has ended, the sea has warmed up, and the days are hot but dry, with humidity still low. Resort rates typically ease from their winter peak, and you can get a table at popular restaurants without a long wait. Whales have moved on, but snorkeling and diving improve as the water warms and visibility increases. This window suits couples and honeymooners especially well, and families traveling before school lets out will find pools and beaches pleasantly uncrowded.
July to September: heat, humidity, and storm season
Summer in Cabo is hot. July brings the warmest sea temperatures of the year, which is great for swimming and fishing, but by August and September the humidity climbs and afternoon storms become possible. This is also when Los Cabos is most exposed to Eastern Pacific hurricanes, with the highest risk in late August and September. Many travelers still have sunny weeks, and resort rates are at their softest, but this is the time to buy travel protection, choose a resort with a strong indoor and pool program, and watch the forecast. September is the quietest month on the calendar, and some restaurants and tour operators use it for their annual break.
October and November: the fall comeback
By mid-to-late October the humidity drops, the storm risk fades, and Cabo comes back to life. The sea is still warm from summer, and big-game fishing tournaments bring anglers into the marina in October. Late October and the first half of November combine near-perfect weather with pre-holiday value, which makes it one of our favorite windows to recommend. Thanksgiving week is busy with US families, and by December the winter crowds and whales both return.
A note on beaches and swimming
Cabo is a resort destination with a catch: many of its most beautiful beaches face the open Pacific and are not safe for swimming because of strong currents and shore break. Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas and several beaches along the Corridor and in San Jose del Cabo on the Sea of Cortez side are the swimmable ones, and resorts on those stretches are worth seeking out if swimming in the ocean matters to you. Every resort has excellent pools, and the calm water at Chileno and Santa Maria bays is ideal for snorkeling.
