Best time to visit Los Cabos

Los Cabos has a desert climate with more than 300 sunny days a year and very little rain. From November through May, daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit with cool, dry evenings; this is peak season and the whale-watching window runs from mid-December to mid-April. June is hot and dry with warm water and fewer visitors. July through October is the hottest, most humid period, with highs in the 90s and a short rainy season; it is also hurricane season, with the highest risk in September, so we recommend travel protection then. Baja California Sur stays on Mountain Standard Time year-round, matching Pacific Daylight Time in summer.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

Cabo San Lucas is the energetic end, with resorts around Medano Beach, the only major swimmable beach in town, plus the marina, restaurants and clubs within walking distance. The Tourist Corridor between the two towns holds the large all-inclusives, golf resorts and luxury properties on secluded coves such as Chileno Bay and Santa María Bay, where swimming and snorkeling are safe. San José del Cabo is calmer and more traditional, with boutique hotels near the art district and beachfront resorts along a long but generally non-swimmable beach. The East Cape beyond San José offers remote luxury resorts and a marina village on the calm Sea of Cortez. Note that many Cabo beaches have dangerous currents; we will tell you which resorts have swimmable water.

Los Cabos International Airport, near San José del Cabo, receives nonstop flights from many US gateways. Typical flight times are roughly 2 hours from Phoenix, 2.5 hours from Los Angeles or San Diego, 3 hours from San Francisco, Denver or Dallas, 3.5 hours from Houston, 4.5 hours from Chicago, and 5.5 to 6 hours from New York.
