The Riviera Maya is the 80-mile stretch of Caribbean coastline south of Cancun on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, running from the fishing village of Puerto Morelos through Playa del Carmen and Akumal to Tulum. It is fringed by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, dotted with freshwater cenotes and backed by jungle, and it is home to the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in the world.

Best time to visit the Riviera Maya

The coast is warm all year, with daytime highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit in winter and around 90 in summer. The dry season from December through April is peak season, with sunny skies, low humidity and the clearest water for snorkeling; Easter week is busy with Mexican families. May and early June are hot but quieter and good value. The wet season runs June through October, with short afternoon storms and high humidity; hurricane season spans June through November with the highest risk in September and October. Sargassum seaweed can appear between May and October and varies by beach; resorts on coves and near Puerto Morelos often fare better. November is an excellent shoulder month. Quintana Roo stays on Eastern Standard Time year-round.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

Puerto Morelos, closest to the airport, has large all-inclusive complexes and a low-key village with a reef national park just offshore. Playa del Carmen offers boutique hotels and condos near Fifth Avenue for travelers who want restaurants and nightlife on foot, plus gated resort communities at Playacar. Between Playa and Tulum, the resort zones of Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha, Akumal and Kantenah hold the big adults-only and family all-inclusives, many with private beaches, spas and water parks. Tulum's beach road is lined with eco-chic cabanas and boutique hotels on the sand, while Tulum town has simple guesthouses and cenote access. Getting there from the US

Most travelers fly into Cancun, which has nonstop service from dozens of US cities: roughly 2 hours from Miami, 2.5 hours from Houston or Dallas, 3 hours from Atlanta, 3.5 to 4 hours from New York or Chicago, and 4.5 to 5 hours from Los Angeles. Tulum's newer international airport, south of the resort zone, has a growing number of US nonstops and is convenient for Tulum and Akumal stays.
