Most K-12 spring breaks in 2027 fall in one of two weeks, March 22 to 26 or March 29 to April 2, with Easter on Sunday March 28. Those weeks overlap the college spring break peak, so families do better in the Riviera Maya, Punta Cana or Aruba than in the Cancun hotel zone. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 and we book the flights, rooms and transfers together.
Spring break is the hardest family trip to book well, because the dates are decided for you and every family in your school district is chasing the same seven nights. Add tens of thousands of college students heading to the same handful of beaches in the same month, and the difference between a good week and a disappointing one comes down to which resort area you choose and how early you commit. This guide sets out the 2027 dates, the places that stay calm, the day trips worth doing and the paperwork.
A sample 7-night family spring break week
Spring break weeks work best with two outings and plenty of pool time, because the children have been in school all winter and mostly want to swim. This is a typical Riviera Maya week; in Punta Cana we replace the ruins days with a catamaran and a lagoon visit, and in Aruba with a glass-bottom boat and an island drive.
| Days | Where | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 (Sat Mar 20 or 27) | Arrive | Morning nonstop, private transfer with car seats, check-in and a first evening on the beach |
| Day 2 | Resort | Pool and beach day, kids club registration and dinner at an a la carte restaurant |
| Day 3 | Chichen Itza | Early start for the great pyramid and ball court, with a cenote swim and lunch on the way back |
| Day 4 | Resort | Recovery day: water park or splash pad, a parents' spa hour and an early dinner |
| Day 5 | Tulum and a cenote | The cliff-top ruins above the sea in the morning, then a shaded cenote swim in the afternoon |
| Day 6 | Cozumel or the beach | The ferry across for snorkeling and a beach club, or a full day of doing nothing at the resort |
| Day 7 | Resort | Last swim, souvenir shopping and a family dinner |
| Day 8 (Sat Mar 27 or Apr 3) | Depart | Late checkout where available, transfer and the flight home |
Spring break flights and why early booking matters
Cancun is the shortest hop for much of the country: about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes from Houston and Dallas, about 3 hours 45 minutes from Chicago and roughly 4 hours from New York. Punta Cana is about 3 hours 45 minutes from New York and Newark and roughly 2 hours from Miami. Aruba is about 4 hours 30 minutes from the Northeast. Even when you stay in the Riviera Maya, you fly into Cancun and drive 45 to 90 minutes south.
School weeks are fixed, which means demand arrives all at once and does not spread. Saturday departures in late March are the heaviest of the spring, and the family rooms go before the flights do. We book spring break six to nine months ahead as a matter of course. If your district has a Friday early release, flying out that evening instead of Saturday morning often opens far more choice, and returning on the Sunday rather than the Saturday does the same at the other end. See our family travel desk for how we handle seats together and car seats.
Spring break 2027 dates: schools, colleges and Easter
Districts publish their own calendars, so check yours before you plan anything. That said, the 2027 pattern is clear.
- K-12 spring break 2027: most districts fall on the week of March 22 to 26 or the week of March 29 to April 2, with travel on the Saturdays either side.
- Easter 2027: Easter Sunday is March 28, which sits between those two weeks, so some districts break for the week before it and others for the week after.
- College spring break: runs from late February through early April, with the heaviest weeks between March 6 and March 27. Many campuses take the weeks of March 8 and March 15.
- The overlap: the school week of March 22 to 26 sits inside the college peak, while March 29 to April 2 falls just after it, which usually makes the later week calmer on the beach.
- Weather: late March is dry season in Mexico and the Caribbean, warm and sunny, well outside hurricane season, with breezy afternoons on the east-facing coasts.
What is included in the package
- Round-trip flights from your US airport, with seats together requested at booking.
- An all-inclusive resort stay with meals, snacks, drinks and most non-motorized water sports.
- Family rooms: connecting rooms or a two-bedroom suite, confirmed in writing rather than requested.
- Private airport transfers sized for the family, with car seats where you need them.
- Kids club and water park details checked for your children's exact ages before you commit.
- Day trips booked in advance, including the ruins tours that sell out in peak weeks.
- One contact 24/7 before and during the trip, reachable from the resort.
Where families should stay during the college peak
Avoid the Cancun hotel zone in the busiest college weeks. It is the single most useful piece of advice we give in March. Parts of the strip run pool parties, beach clubs and late music through the peak, and a family room above a pool stage is a long week. The northern end of the zone is calmer and some larger resorts handle it well, but if your dates fall between March 6 and March 27, we would rather place you elsewhere.
The Riviera Maya is the natural alternative: the same airport, a 45-minute to 90-minute drive south, and resorts set in low-rise grounds along reef-protected bays such as Puerto Morelos and Akumal. Water parks, lazy rivers and large kids clubs are common here, and the ruins and cenotes are closer than they are from Cancun. It is where we send most spring break families.
Punta Cana is the other strong option, with the long Bavaro strip sheltered by an offshore reef and a deep supply of two-bedroom family suites, plus short flights from the East Coast. Aruba is calmer again, small, easy and reliably sunny, and its west-coast beaches are shallow and gentle. If you are weighing the first two against each other, read our Cancun and Punta Cana comparison.
Day trips, booking early and keeping the week calm
Day trips are what children remember from a Mexico spring break, and four of them are worth the early start:
- Chichen Itza: the great pyramid, the ball court and the sacred cenote, about two to three hours inland. Go early, take hats and water, and expect a long but memorable day.
- Tulum ruins: a walled Mayan town on a cliff above the sea, smaller and easier than Chichen Itza and a good first ruins visit for younger children.
- Cenotes: the freshwater sinkholes of the Yucatan, some open and swimmable, some in caves. Cool, shaded and a relief on a hot afternoon; bring biodegradable sunscreen or none at all, as many require it.
- Cozumel: the ferry from Playa del Carmen takes about 45 minutes and opens up some of the clearest snorkeling in the region, plus beach clubs on the calm western shore.
Book early, and mean it. Spring break is the one week of the year where waiting has an obvious cost. The family suites, connecting rooms and swim-out rooms are limited at every resort, the nonstop seats on the peak Saturdays fill first, and the big ruins tours cap their group sizes. Six to nine months ahead is normal. If you are reading this in autumn 2026, you are on time; if you are reading it in February 2027, call us anyway, because cancellations do come back and we watch for them.
Keeping the week calm is mostly about the room and the routine. Ask for a room away from the entertainment stage and the main pool, book the a la carte dinners on your first morning, put the big excursions on days three and five so nobody is exhausted on arrival or departure day, and keep one whole day with nothing planned. Pack the children's medicines and a change of clothes in the carry-on, and register everyone at the kids club on day one, when the queue is shortest.
Entry rules for US citizens in 2026
Governments change these rules often, so confirm them on official sources before you travel. Recent rules for US passport holders:
- Mexico: no visa is needed for a tourist stay. The tourist fee is included in the airfare, and officers stamp the passport with the number of days allowed instead of issuing the old paper form.
- Quintana Roo visitor tax: Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Tulum and Cozumel all sit in Quintana Roo, and the state visitor tax is paid online, per person, children included. Keep the QR code on your phone.
- Dominican Republic: if you choose Punta Cana instead, every traveler completes the official e-Ticket online at no charge, once before arrival and again before departure.
- Aruba: each traveler completes the online ED card before departure, which includes the island sustainability fee.
- Passports and consent letters: every traveler, including infants, needs a valid passport book. A child traveling with one parent should carry a notarized consent letter from the other parent and a copy of the birth certificate.
Before booking, read the current US State Department travel advisory for every country on your itinerary and consider enrolling in its STEP alert service. Rules for travelers on non-US passports, including green card holders, differ, so tell us every traveler's nationality when you call.
How to get more from your budget
- Take the later school week where your district offers a choice, because March 29 to April 2 sits after the college peak.
- Fly out Friday evening and home on Sunday if your calendar allows, to sidestep the heaviest Saturdays.
- Compare a two-bedroom suite with two connecting rooms; either can suit the same family better.
- Book the ruins tours with the room, before the peak-week group sizes fill up.
- Ask what the resort includes. Water park access, a la carte dinners and snorkeling gear are not standard everywhere.
