Cancun sits at the northeastern tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, facing the Caribbean Sea. Its Hotel Zone is a 14-mile barrier island of white sand and turquoise water lined with resorts, while the mainland city, El Centro, offers markets, local restaurants and the bus station for day trips. It is the most popular international beach destination for US travelers, and for good reason.

Why Cancun for your vacation

Cancun combines a short flight, a huge choice of all-inclusive resorts and some of the best beaches in the hemisphere. The sand is cool, powdery limestone that never burns your feet, and the water shifts from pale green to deep blue within a few yards. Because the airport handles more international flights than any other in Mexico, nonstop service from dozens of US cities is plentiful year-round. Within two hours you can reach the pyramids of Chichén Itzá, the cliffside ruins of Tulum, freshwater cenotes and eco-adventure parks. Add world-class nightlife at Punta Cancún, a calm lagoon for water sports, and family resorts with water parks and kids' clubs, and Cancun suits almost every kind of traveler.

What's included in a Cancun package

Every package is built to order. A typical Cancun package includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from your home airport to Cancun (CUN) on major airlines, nonstop where available
  • Your choice of accommodation: all-inclusive beach resort, adults-only resort, family resort with water park, boutique hotel or condo, from well-known resort brands and independent hotels
  • Private airport transfers to and from the Hotel Zone, typically 20 to 30 minutes each way
  • Optional add-ons such as a Chichén Itzá tour, an Isla Mujeres catamaran day, swimming with whale sharks in summer, a rental car, travel protection or seat upgrades
  • All-inclusive meals and drinks, breakfast included, or room only, depending on the property

Cancun is also a gateway to western Caribbean sailings, and we can pair a cruise with a resort stay through our cruise packages. Call for current pricing on your dates.

Best time to visit Cancun

Cancun is warm year-round, with daytime highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit in winter and near 90 in summer. The dry season from December through April is peak season, with sunny days, low humidity and the clearest water; March brings spring-break crowds to the party zone. May and early June are hot but quiet and good value. The wet season runs from June through October, with brief afternoon storms and high humidity, and hurricane season spans June through November with the highest risk in September and October. Seaweed, called sargassum, can wash ashore between May and October in varying amounts, and resorts clean beaches daily. November is an excellent shoulder month. The state of Quintana Roo stays on Eastern Standard Time year-round, so Cancun matches the US East Coast in winter.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

The Hotel Zone is shaped like a seven. The northern arm, from Punta Cancún toward the mainland, faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, with calm, shallow water ideal for families and older travelers; it is also closest to the nightlife and shopping malls. The long eastern arm faces the open Caribbean with the widest beaches and bigger surf, and holds most of the large all-inclusive resorts, from adults-only towers to family mega-resorts with water parks. The southern end near the lagoon mouth is quieter, with reef snorkeling and upscale properties. El Centro on the mainland has affordable hotels and authentic restaurants for travelers on a tighter spending plan. Costa Mujeres, just north of the city, is a newer resort strip with calm water and modern all-inclusives. Whether you want swim-up suites, a kids' club, or a boutique room near the clubs, we will match the resort to your priorities.

Things to do in Cancun

  • Swim and sunbathe at Playa Delfines, Playa Chac Mool and Playa Tortugas
  • Day-trip to Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, with a cenote swim on the way back
  • Take the ferry or a catamaran to Isla Mujeres for snorkeling and the sculpture-filled underwater museum
  • Explore the cliffside Maya ruins at Tulum and the eco-adventure parks along the Riviera Maya
  • Snorkel with whale sharks off Isla Contoy from June through September
  • Visit the Maya Museum and the El Rey ruins inside the Hotel Zone
  • Dance until dawn at the clubs of Punta Cancún or enjoy a sunset dinner cruise on the lagoon

Getting there from the US

Cancun's international airport receives more US nonstop flights than any other resort airport in Mexico. Typical flight times are roughly 2 hours from Miami, 2.5 hours from Houston or Dallas, 3 hours from Atlanta or Charlotte, 3.5 to 4 hours from New York or Chicago, and 4.5 to 5 hours from Los Angeles. US passport holders need a valid passport and do not require a visa for tourist stays; your passport is stamped on arrival with your permitted length of stay. Keep the stamp and verify entry requirements before travel. Private transfers to the Hotel Zone take 20 to 30 minutes, and driving is on the right.

Who this package suits

Couples and honeymooners find dozens of adults-only all-inclusives with swim-up suites; ask about business class or first class seats. Families love resorts with water parks, kids' clubs and calm northern beaches. Seniors appreciate short flights, easy transfers and gentle water on the bay side; see our senior travel reservations. Weddings, bachelor and bachelorette parties and reunions can hold seats through group travel flights. Solo travelers enjoy social resorts and easy day tours.

Cancun Vacation Packages: frequently asked questions

February and April offer dry, sunny weather with warm seas and lighter crowds than March, when spring break fills the party zone. December through April is peak season overall. November and early May are excellent shoulder months with good weather and easier resort availability.

Nonstop flights take roughly 2 hours from Miami, 2.5 hours from Houston or Dallas, 3 hours from Atlanta, 3.5 to 4 hours from New York or Chicago, and 4.5 to 5 hours from Los Angeles. Dozens of US cities have nonstop service, especially in winter.

Yes. US passport holders need a valid passport to fly to Mexico but no visa for tourist stays. Your passport is stamped on arrival with your permitted length of stay, so keep it safe. Entry procedures can change, so verify current requirements before travel.

Most visitors choose all-inclusive, which covers meals, drinks, activities and often kids' clubs, and the Hotel Zone has the widest selection anywhere. Room only or breakfast included suits travelers who want to explore El Centro's restaurants and take many day trips. We can compare both.

Very. Family resorts offer water parks, kids' clubs, splash pools and family suites, the northern Hotel Zone beaches are calm and shallow, and excursions such as Isla Mujeres, cenotes and eco-parks suit all ages. Tell us your children's ages and we will avoid adults-only properties.

Yes. Flights are short, transfers take under half an hour, and resorts offer elevators, beachfront rooms and attentive service. The bay-side beaches have gentle water, and guided tours make ruins and cenotes easy. Tell us about mobility needs and we will select accessible properties.

The Hotel Zone and resort areas are heavily patrolled and generally safe. Use normal precautions with valuables, use licensed taxis or resort transfers, avoid buying illegal substances, and respect red flags on the beach, which signal strong currents. Drink bottled water and buy travel protection during hurricane season.

The Mexican peso is the currency, but US dollars are widely accepted in the Hotel Zone; paying in pesos usually gives a better rate. Tipping is customary even at all-inclusives: a couple of dollars for bartenders and housekeeping daily, and 10 to 15 percent for waiters and guides.

For December through April, book three to six months ahead, and earlier for Christmas, Presidents' Day, spring break and Easter, when nonstop flights and popular resorts sell out. Summer and fall trips can usually be arranged a few weeks out with wide choice.
