Call now +1 (323) 800 6001 - if online check-in refuses your booking, a travel expert sorts it out, 24/7.

Quick answer: Air Canada check-in opens 24 hours before departure at aircanada.com › Check in or in the Air Canada app (12 hours at airport kiosks). You must be checked in with a boarding pass 60 minutes before departure on every route, bags dropped 60 minutes out (45 within Canada), and at the gate 30 minutes before (45 international). Stuck? Call +1 (323) 800 6001.

Check in for your Air Canada flight in 3 steps

  1. Open aircanada.com/us/en/aco/home/plan/check-in-information/check-in.html from 24 hours before departure, or tap Check in in the Air Canada app.
  2. Enter your 6-character booking reference and last name (Aeroplan members can log in instead). For flights that leave Canada you'll be asked for passport details if they're not already on the booking.
  3. Choose a seat, pay for bags if needed, and get your boarding pass - mobile pass in the app or wallet, an emailed PDF to print, or print it at a kiosk when you arrive.

Four ways to check in with Air Canada

Website. The check-in page accepts your booking reference and last name from 24 hours before departure and issues a boarding pass you can print or save as a PDF. It also lets you add passport information, pick or change a seat and pay for checked bags.

Air Canada app. Same 24-hour window, with a mobile boarding pass that updates if the gate changes. If you check in for a return flight abroad, keep the PDF copy too, because some airports still ask for a printed pass at security.

Airport kiosk. Kiosks open 12 hours before departure, print boarding passes and bag tags, and are the quickest option if online check-in failed for a document reason that a kiosk can accept.

Counter. Necessary when you're travelling with a lap infant that was added by phone, need special assistance, or your travel documents didn't validate online. Arrive early: the counter is bound by the same 60-minute cutoff.

Why online check-in sometimes fails

Air Canada's website refuses check-in for a few predictable reasons, and none of them are fixed by trying again. The most common: a segment operated by a partner airline (United, Lufthansa and other Star Alliance carriers check you in on their own systems), passport details that don't match the ticket name, a booking with an unpaid balance or an unapplied travel credit, a lap infant that was added by phone, and international itineraries where Air Canada needs to verify visas or entry documents in person.

If the check-in page shows an error, don't wait for the airport. Call +1 (323) 800 6001: a Fond Travels agent can read the booking, correct the passenger data that is blocking it, and, if a name correction or partner ticket is the problem, handle it with Air Canada while you pack. Air Canada's own FAQ notes that passenger information cannot be changed online, so this is the one part of check-in you genuinely can't self-serve.

Seats and bags at check-in

Seat selection at check-in follows your fare: Basic fares get a seat assigned by Air Canada; Standard and higher fares can pick from what's left, with Preferred seats paid. If you want to sit together, choose seats when you book rather than at the 24-hour mark. Our Air Canada seat selection guide lists the fees by fare and route.

Checked bags can be paid during online check-in and dropped at the bag-drop counter or self-tagging kiosk. Remember the two bag-drop deadlines: 45 minutes before a flight within Canada, 60 minutes for the U.S. and international. Carry-on rules and checked allowances are on our Air Canada baggage page.
