Why Paris & France for your vacation

Paris is the most visited city in the world for good reason: the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower at dusk, café terraces, bakeries on every corner and a compact center you can cross on foot or by Métro in minutes. France beyond the capital is just as rewarding and easy to reach by high-speed rail: Renaissance châteaux in the Loire, the D-Day beaches and Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, lavender and hill villages in Provence, the beaches of Nice and Antibes, and the vineyards of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne.

What's included in a Paris & France package

Every package is tailored to your dates and interests. A typical Paris vacation package includes:

  • Round-trip flights on major airlines from your US gateway to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or Orly (ORY)
  • A centrally located hotel — well-known hotel brands and independent boutique properties — with breakfast included where offered
  • Private airport transfers and, for multi-city trips, reserved high-speed rail seats: Paris to Lyon or Bordeaux in about 2 hours, Paris to Nice in roughly 5.5 to 6 hours
  • Timed-entry tickets for the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Eiffel Tower, plus a Seine cruise
  • Guided day trips to Versailles, Giverny, the Champagne houses of Reims and Épernay or the Loire châteaux
  • Optional add-ons: Normandy, Provence, the Riviera, the French Alps, or a rental car for the countryside

Best time to visit Paris & France

April through June and September through October are the best months: mild days, chestnut trees in leaf or turning gold, long evenings and manageable lines. July and August are warm and busy; August in particular sees many Parisians leave the city, so some family-run restaurants close, while the Riviera and Provence are at their fullest. Lavender in Provence blooms from late June into July. November through March is cool and gray but rewards museum-lovers with shorter waits, and December is genuinely festive, with Christmas markets, illuminated department-store windows and skating rinks. France keeps Central European Time, six hours ahead of US Eastern.

Where to stay: areas and resort styles

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements that spiral out from the center, and the right one shapes your trip. Le Marais (3rd and 4th) is historic, fashionable and full of small hotels, galleries and falafel stands. Saint-Germain (6th) is the classic Left Bank choice: bookshops, cafés and elegant boutique hotels. The Latin Quarter (5th) is lively and good value near Notre-Dame. The 8th, around the Champs-Élysées, holds the grand palace hotels. Montmartre (18th) is village-like and hilly with views over the city. Opéra (9th) is central and well connected, with larger business-style hotels, and the 1st around the Louvre puts the museums on your doorstep. Outside Paris, choose a Loire château hotel, a Provençal farmhouse, a Riviera seafront resort or a ski-in chalet in the Alps; well-known resort brands and independent hotels are both available.

Things to do in Paris & France

  • Paris icons — the Eiffel Tower summit, the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay, Sainte-Chapelle's stained glass, the Arc de Triomphe rooftop
  • Seine cruise — by day or at night, when the bridges and monuments are lit
  • Versailles — the palace, Hall of Mirrors and gardens, an easy half-day by train
  • Giverny — Monet's house and water-lily garden, open April through October
  • Loire Valley — Chambord, Chenonceau and Amboise on a day trip or overnight
  • Normandy — the D-Day beaches, the American Cemetery and Mont-Saint-Michel
  • Champagne — cellar tours and tastings in Reims and Épernay, 45 minutes by high-speed rail
  • Provence — Avignon, the Luberon hill villages and lavender fields
  • French Riviera — Nice's Promenade des Anglais, Cannes, Antibes and the villages above Monaco
  • Lyon, Bordeaux and Burgundy — France's food capital and its two great wine regions

Getting there from the US

Nonstop flights from East Coast gateways such as New York, Boston, Washington, Miami and Atlanta reach Paris in roughly 7 to 8 hours; from the West Coast plan on roughly 10.5 to 11.5 hours. Most departures are overnight, landing mid-morning at Charles de Gaulle, the main international airport, or Orly, which is closer to the city. US passport holders can visit France and the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with a passport valid at least three months beyond departure. The ETIAS travel authorization is being introduced for the Schengen area, so verify current requirements before travel. The currency is the euro, the language is French (English is widely spoken in hotels, museums and restaurants), and cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Who this package suits

Couples and honeymooners: Paris needs no introduction, and a few nights in Provence or on the Riviera add sunshine. Families: the Eiffel Tower, boat rides, crêpes and Versailles' gardens keep kids happy. Seniors: private transfers, elevator-served hotels and small-group tours keep the pace comfortable; see our senior travel reservations. Groups: private guides, coach transfers and blocked rooms for reunions and anniversaries; start with group travel flights. Solo travelers: Paris is walkable, safe and easy by Métro. For a lie-flat overnight, ask about business class or first class fares.

Paris & France Vacation Packages: frequently asked questions

May, June, September and October give the best mix of mild weather, long evenings and manageable crowds. April is pretty but showery. July and August are warm and busy, with many Parisians away in August. December is cold but festive, with markets and holiday lights across the city.

Nonstop flights from East Coast gateways such as New York, Boston, Washington, Miami and Atlanta take roughly 7 to 8 hours. From the West Coast expect roughly 10.5 to 11.5 hours nonstop. Most flights depart in the evening and land in Paris mid-morning.

US passport holders can visit France and the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with a passport valid at least three months beyond departure. The ETIAS travel authorization is being introduced for the Schengen area, so verify current requirements before travel.

Paris is not an all-inclusive destination. Packages typically pair a hotel with breakfast included, airport transfers, museum tickets and tours, leaving lunches and dinners open for the city's restaurants. Some Riviera and Alpine resorts offer half-board plans, which your expert can add to a multi-city trip.

Yes. The Eiffel Tower, Seine boat rides, the Luxembourg Gardens, crêpe stands and Versailles' gardens all work well for children, and the Métro makes getting around simple. We suggest apartments or connecting rooms, skip-the-line tickets and no more than two museums a day.

Very much so. We arrange private transfers, hotels with elevators, ground-floor or low-floor rooms and small-group tours at a relaxed pace. Museums have seating and lifts, and Seine cruises and coach day trips cover a lot without much walking. Ask about our senior travel reservations.

Paris is a safe city with low violent crime. The main issue is pickpocketing on the Métro and around the Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Coeur and the Louvre, so keep valuables zipped and in front of you and ignore petition or bracelet scams. Check current US State Department guidance before you go.

France uses the euro, and cards are accepted almost everywhere. Service is included in restaurant bills by law, so tipping is optional; leaving a few euros for good service is appreciated. Round up taxi fares and tip private drivers and guides for a full day.

Four to eight months ahead is ideal for spring and fall travel and for Christmas week, when well-located hotels and lie-flat cabins sell out first. Eiffel Tower summit and Louvre tickets open weeks ahead and go quickly. Winter trips can often be arranged with shorter notice.
