Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Hit by Major Cyberattack, Causing Widespread Disruptions

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) was struck by a significant cyberattack over the weekend, leading to extensive outages affecting the airport’s internet, phones, email, and various operational systems. The cyber incident, which has now stretched into its third day, has thrown travel plans into disarray for thousands of passengers.

The Port of Seattle, which oversees Sea-Tac, is working diligently to address the disruption. The airport’s aviation managing director, Lance Lyttle, assured the public that efforts are underway around the clock to restore full functionality. “We’re working tirelessly to get our systems back online and minimize the impact on our passengers,” Lyttle said during a press briefing.

Despite the severity of the attack, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Customs and Border Protection have confirmed that security screenings have not been compromised. However, the outage has impacted the Port of Seattle’s baggage sorting operations, prompting airlines such as Delta and Alaska Airlines—both significant users of Sea-Tac—to advise passengers to avoid checking bags, if possible, to prevent delays.

Travelers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys, as the outage has led to longer security lines and wait times at baggage claims. With terminal screens also down, some passengers have needed help finding their gate information. The airport has recommended using airline mobile apps to access boarding passes and bag tags.

The Port of Seattle has not yet provided a timeline for restoring complete services but promises ongoing updates as progress continues.
