Where each one actually is
Cancun is a city, and its Hotel Zone is a narrow barrier island lined with high-rise resorts, malls, and clubs, about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. The Riviera Maya is not a town but a roughly 80-mile stretch of coastline running south from just below the airport through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, and Tulum. Resorts here are spread out along the highway, often on large private beachfronts backed by jungle, with transfer times ranging from 30 minutes for the northern properties to nearly two hours for Tulum.
Beaches
Cancun's beaches are famous for their color, and the calm north-facing stretch near Punta Cancun is excellent for swimming. The long east-facing strip has bigger surf and a stronger current. Riviera Maya beaches are more varied: some resorts sit on wide, powdery sand, others on rockier coves, and a few have reef-protected lagoons that are wonderful for snorkeling. Akumal is known for sea turtles in the shallows. Both areas see sargassum seaweed, mainly from spring through late summer and worse in some years than others; the Riviera Maya's exposure can be heavier in bad years, though many resorts install barriers and clear the sand daily. Winter is usually clearest for both.
Vibe and things to do
Cancun is built for going out. You can walk from your hotel to restaurants, shops, and clubs, take the ferry to Isla Mujeres, and still be back for a late dinner. The Riviera Maya is quieter and more resort-centered, but its surroundings are richer: cenotes to swim in, the Tulum ruins on a cliff above the sea, the Coba pyramid in the jungle, and the big eco-parks like Xcaret and Xel-Ha. Playa del Carmen is the one place in the Riviera Maya with a real walkable town, and its Fifth Avenue is lively without being as loud as Cancun's club strip.
Cost tier
Cancun spans the widest range, from simple downtown hotels to high-end beachfront resorts, so it is the easier place to control the budget. The Riviera Maya leans upscale: large premium all-inclusives, adults-only retreats, and boutique properties around Tulum that sit at the top of the market.
