Paris vs London for a First Trip to Europe

If this is your first time in Europe, London is the easier landing: same language, familiar rhythms and a huge list of sights that need little planning. Paris is the more romantic and more distinctly foreign experience, and the one most people picture when they imagine Europe. The good news is that a train connects them in about two and a quarter hours, so with a week or more you do not have to choose. Here is how they compare and who should pick which.

Vibe and first impressions

London is big, layered and varied: royal pageantry in Westminster, markets in Borough and Camden, theater in the West End, pubs on every corner and neighborhoods that each feel like their own town. It moves fast but it is easy to read. Paris is compact, elegant and consistent: the same cream-colored buildings, café terraces and tree-lined boulevards repeat across the city, which is exactly its charm. Paris rewards slowing down. London rewards curiosity and a good pair of walking shoes.

Sights and museums

Both cities have more than a week's worth. London's headline list includes the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, the National Gallery and the Tate Modern, and the permanent collections of the major museums are free to enter, which is a real budget advantage for families. Paris counters with the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, Notre-Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, Montmartre and the Palace of Versailles a short train ride away. Paris's icons are more concentrated and photograph better; London's collection is broader and better for rainy days.

Cost tier

Both are among Europe's more expensive capitals, and neither is clearly less expensive overall. London hotels tend to run higher and the exchange rate with the pound works against US visitors, but the free museums and pub meals balance it. Paris hotels are smaller and often better value for a central location, and a set lunch menu at a neighborhood bistro is one of the great values in either city.
