The Best Time for Umrah in 2027: A Month-by-Month Guide for US Travelers

Quick answer: For most US travelers, the most comfortable time for Umrah in the 2026-2027 season is December 2026 to early February 2027. The weather is at its mildest, and the weeks of Rajab and Sha'ban before Ramadan are calmer than the peak. Ramadan 2027 is expected from about February 8 to March 9, subject to the moon sighting. It is the most rewarding and the most crowded time of the year. Avoid planning Umrah between mid-April and late May 2027, when Umrah closes to international travelers ahead of Hajj. To match the dates to your family's calendar, call a travel expert at Fond Travels on +1 (323) 800 6001.

Assalamu Alaikum. Islamic dates move about eleven days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar, and the exact start of each month depends on the moon sighting. All the 2027 dates below are approximate. The Umrah season dates come from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's pattern for the 1447 season, and the 1448 dates will be confirmed by the Ministry.

What decides the best time for you

There is no single best month. The right time depends on four things:

  • Who is traveling. Older parents and young children are much more comfortable in the cooler months. Heat is the biggest health risk the Saudi health authorities warn about for older pilgrims.
  • Your calendar. School breaks and work leave often decide the window before anything else.
  • Your goal. Some travelers want the spiritual intensity of Ramadan. Others want space to perform tawaf without long waits.
  • Availability and cost. Hotels near the Haram and nonstop flights fill first in Ramadan, the last ten nights and US school holidays. Booking early matters most for those dates.

Fall 2026: October and November

The season is well under way after its reopening following Hajj in 2026. October is still hot in Makkah, with daytime highs often around 100°F, and it eases through November. Crowds are moderate outside weekends.

  • Thanksgiving week, with the holiday on November 26, 2026, gives many US families an extra few days. Flights in that week are in demand, so book early.
  • Rabi' al-Awwal, the month of the Prophet's birth, falls in late summer to early fall in 2026 and draws extra visitors to Madinah.
  • Plan tawaf and walks between the hotel and the Haram for the early morning and after Isha.

Winter break: mid-December 2026 to early January 2027

This is one of the most popular windows for US families. The weather is the mildest of the year, with highs in the 80s°F in Makkah and cooler evenings in Madinah, where nights can drop into the 50s°F.

  • Book flights and Haram-view hotels months ahead. Travelers from North America, Europe and South Africa all use this window.
  • Pack a light jacket for Madinah and for air-conditioned interiors.
  • Expect busy weekends. Thursday night and Friday are the busiest days of the week at both mosques.

Rajab and Sha'ban: January to early February 2027

For many travelers this is the sweet spot. The weather stays pleasant, the winter-break crowds have gone, and Ramadan has not yet started.

  • Ideal for seniors and first-timers. Tawaf and sa'i are easier to manage at a calm pace, and wheelchair and golf-cart services are less stretched.
  • Good availability for hotels within a short walk of the Haram.
  • Arrive in the last days of Sha'ban if you want to welcome Ramadan in the Haram without paying for the peak weeks.

Ramadan 2027: about February 8 to March 9

Umrah in Ramadan carries special merit, and the atmosphere in the Haram, with taraweeh, iftar in the courtyards and the night prayers of the last ten nights, is unlike any other time. It is also the hardest time to plan.

  • The last ten nights, about February 27 to March 9, 2027, are the busiest days of the year. The mosque and the surrounding streets reach capacity well before prayer times.
  • Nusuk permits for the peak days fill early. Book them as soon as the app shows your dates.
  • Hotels near the Haram are booked as a block for the last ten nights, often months ahead.
  • The first two weeks of Ramadan are noticeably calmer, and they suit older parents and families with young children.
  • Fasting in a new time zone takes adjustment. Arrive a day or two before you need to be at your best.

See our Ramadan Umrah packages for 2027 for how we plan these trips.

Eid al-Fitr and spring: mid-March to early April 2027

Eid al-Fitr is expected around March 9 or 10, 2027. The Eid days are busy and festive in both cities. After that, crowds ease quickly, but this is also when the Umrah season starts to close.

  • Umrah visas stop around Eid. In the 1447 season, the last date to issue Umrah visas was 1 Shawwal, the first day of Eid.
  • Entry closes about two weeks later. In 1447, the last date for Umrah travelers to enter was 15 Shawwal.
  • Departure deadline. In 1447, Umrah travelers had to leave by 1 Dhul Qa'dah.

If the Ministry repeats that pattern, the 1448 cut-offs would fall around March 9, March 24 and April 8, 2027. These are our estimates, not announcements. If your trip falls in late March or early April, confirm the Ministry's calendar before you book, and allow a margin before the departure deadline. US spring break often falls in this window, so families should plan the dates with care.

The pre-Hajj closure: about mid-April to late May 2027

In the weeks before Hajj, Makkah is reserved for Hajj pilgrims and the people serving them. Umrah permits are not issued to international travelers, whatever visa they hold. Hajj 2027 is expected around May 14 to 19, and the Umrah season usually reopens a few days after Hajj ends, from about 14 Dhul Hijjah.

If you hope to perform Hajj, the process is entirely separate. US pilgrims register through the official Nusuk Hajj platform. See our guide to Hajj 2027 registration for US pilgrims.

Summer 2027: June to September

Summer is when many US families have the most time away from school and work, and the new Umrah season begins. It is also the hottest time of year in Makkah, with daytime highs often above 105°F.

  • Plan the day around the heat. Perform Umrah after Isha or before Fajr, and rest in the hotel through the afternoon.
  • Drink more than you think you need. Zamzam water is available throughout both mosques.
  • Talk to your doctor first if you or a parent take medicines that affect hydration, such as diuretics. The Saudi health authorities specifically mention these.
  • Choose a hotel very close to the Haram, so the walk in the heat is short.

Weather by month in Makkah and Madinah

These are approximate long-term average daytime highs. Individual days can be several degrees hotter, and the walk across open courtyards at midday feels hotter still.

Madinah sits higher and further inland, so it is cooler than Makkah from November to March, with winter nights in the 50s°F. Pack a warm layer for Madinah even when Makkah feels warm.

How the calendar affects cost and availability

The same hotel can be easy to book in January and impossible in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Three things move availability more than anything else:

  • Distance to the Haram. Hotels within a few minutes' walk of the mosque fill first in every busy week. The further out you go, the more choice there is, but the walk or shuttle becomes part of every prayer.
  • Peak weeks. Ramadan, especially the last ten nights, the Eid days and US winter break are booked earliest. Hotels often sell those nights only as a block.
  • Flights from the US. Nonstop seats to Jeddah and Madinah are limited, and connections through Europe, the Gulf or Istanbul fill up in the same peak weeks.

If your dates are flexible, moving the trip by a week or two either side of a peak often makes a real difference to the choice of hotels and flights.

The best time of day and week

  • Quietest times for tawaf: mid-morning after Duha and late at night after midnight, outside Ramadan.
  • Busiest times: just before and after each prayer, Thursday night, and Friday until after Jumu'ah.
  • Coolest times: before Fajr and after Isha. In summer these are the only comfortable times for the walk to the Haram.
  • Arrival day: many travelers perform Umrah on the night they arrive. If you are traveling with older parents, consider resting first and booking a permit for the next morning.

Our recommendations by traveler

  • First Umrah, adults only: January or early February 2027, or late October to November 2026.
  • Families with school-age children: US winter break, with flights and hotels booked early.
  • Elderly parents: December to early February, with a hotel very close to the Haram. See our guide to Umrah with elderly parents.
  • Ramadan: the first half of the month for comfort, or the last ten nights for the full experience, booked well ahead.
  • A short trip on the way to somewhere else: a quieter month on a stopover visa. See Umrah on a Saudi stopover.
