Delta Plans to Add Premium Economy Service for NYC-LA Routes

Delta Airlines recently declared that it will extend its premium economy service to transcontinental flights starting in September. This move aims to attract customers willing to pay more for extra space and perks, enhancing their overall travel experience.

Premium economy is a relatively new service class that major airlines offer on long-haul, mostly international routes. Set between business class and standard economy, these premium economy tickets often cost twice as much as regular economy seats but offer significantly more comfort.

Delta, along with competitors like United Airlines, is focused on adding more premium seating and upgrading lounges. In the first quarter of this year, Delta saw a 4% increase in ticket revenue from its main cabin, totaling $5.4 billion. Revenue from premium products rose by 10% to $4.4 billion.

The new premium economy service will start on September 10. It will be available on 4 of 11 peak-day flights between Los Angeles and New York's JFK Airport using Boeing 767 aircraft. Delta intends to expand this service to more routes later in the year. Passengers who purchase standard economy tickets can upgrade to premium economy on these transcontinental flights.

Delta Medallion elite members will be eligible for complimentary upgrades to Delta Premium Select. They can also request upgrades to Delta One, the airline's top-tier product. Previously, some Delta planes featured premium economy seats but did not offer the associated amenities. With this change, passengers can now enjoy amenities such as kits, noise-canceling headphones, full meals, and blankets, ensuring a more comfortable journey.
