Huatulco sits on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state, where nine bays and dozens of coves stretch along roughly 20 miles of shoreline backed by dry tropical forest. It is deliberately low-density: no high-rise strips, no all-night party scene, and much of the coast protected inside Huatulco National Park.

Best time to visit Huatulco
Huatulco has one of the sunniest climates on Mexico's Pacific coast. The dry season runs from November through April, with daytime highs in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, low humidity and almost no rain; this is peak season, and December through March books earliest. The rainy season runs June through October, when afternoon or evening storms roll through and the hills turn deep green; mornings are usually clear, resorts are quieter and rates are softer. September and October see the heaviest rain. The sea stays warm all year.
Where to stay: areas and resort styles
Tangolunda Bay is the main resort bay, home to the largest all-inclusive properties and the golf course, with a wide beach and calm water. It is the easiest choice for families.
Chahué and Santa Cruz sit between Tangolunda and La Crucecita. Expect mid-size and boutique hotels, the marina where bay tours depart, and walkable restaurants.
La Crucecita is the town itself, a few blocks inland. Independent hotels here cost less and put you among the market, the plaza and the best regional food; the beach is a short taxi ride away.

Getting there from the US
Huatulco's airport, Bahías de Huatulco International (HUX), is about 20 minutes from the resort bays. Nonstop service from the US is limited and mostly seasonal, so most travelers connect through Mexico City or Houston. Plan on roughly 2 to 2.5 hours in the air from Houston or Dallas to central Mexico, 3.5 to 4 hours from Los Angeles and 5 to 5.5 hours from New York to Mexico City, plus a connection of one to two hours and a flight of about an hour on to Huatulco.
US passport holders need a passport valid for the length of their stay and must complete the FMM entry form, now often handled electronically or on arrival; no visa is required for tourist stays under 180 days, but verify before travel. The currency is the Mexican peso, the language is Spanish, and Huatulco is on Central Time.
