Best time to visit Laos

Laos has a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. November through February is the most pleasant period, with warm sunny days, cool evenings in Luang Prabang and clear skies over the Mekong; it is also peak season, so hotels book early. March and April are dry but very hot, with smoky haze from agricultural burning that can cloud mountain views. The rainy season brings lush green countryside, full waterfalls and high river levels that make boat trips dramatic, with rain typically falling in short afternoon bursts. Lao New Year in mid-April is a joyful water festival, and the That Luang Festival in Vientiane falls in November.
