Assalamu Alaikum. An Umrah package from Washington, DC with Fond Travels brings the whole journey into one plan: flights from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Jeddah or Madinah, a hotel within walking distance of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, a hotel near the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, airport transfers, the high-speed train between the two cities, and guidance on the e-visa and Nusuk permit. Our office is in Woodbridge, Virginia, about 45 minutes from Dulles, so this is our home airport. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 at any hour from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Montgomery, Prince George's or the District, and a travel expert lines up flights, hotel distances and transfers for your dates on the call. This guide covers the nonstop from Dulles, the one-stop alternatives, how local school calendars fit the 2026-2027 Umrah season, and practical tips for getting to the airport.
Nonstop and one-stop flights from Dulles to Jeddah
Washington Dulles is one of only a few US airports with nonstop flights to Saudi Arabia. The Jeddah nonstop operates several times a week, and the flight takes roughly 12 to 13 hours eastbound. For many families this is the simplest way to reach the Haram from the Mid-Atlantic: one flight, no connection, and arrival in Jeddah ready for the road or train to Makkah.
On days when the nonstop does not operate or is full, Dulles has nonstop flights to Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, and each of those cities has several daily flights on to Jeddah and Madinah. European connections through London, Frankfurt or Paris add more times. A one-stop journey from IAD usually takes 15 to 19 hours in total, including the layover.
The nonstop is the first flight to fill for Ramadan, the winter break and Thanksgiving, so pilgrims who want it should plan early. Your expert confirms the current days of operation before quoting.
Route options from Washington, DC
| Routing | Typical journey | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Nonstop Dulles to Jeddah | About 12 to 13 hours | Families, seniors and anyone who wants one flight |
| One stop via Doha or Dubai | About 15 to 18 hours | Evening departures and a Madinah-first plan |
| One stop via Abu Dhabi or Istanbul | About 15 to 18 hours | Travelers who want a daytime connection |
| One stop via London, Frankfurt or Paris | About 16 to 19 hours | Peak dates when Gulf connections sell out |
Should you land in Jeddah or Madinah first?
With the Dulles nonstop, Jeddah first is the natural choice. You cross the miqat in the air, so most pilgrims change into ihram at Dulles or on board before the announcement. The high-speed railway station is connected to Terminal 1 at King Abdulaziz International Airport, and Makkah is about an hour to 90 minutes away by car.
Madinah first requires a connection, usually through a Gulf hub, but it gives time to rest near Masjid an-Nabawi and adjust to the seven or eight hour time difference before the more demanding days in Makkah. You then enter ihram at the Madinah miqat on the way to Makkah and fly home from Jeddah. We often suggest this order for seniors, young children and first-time pilgrims. For the rites themselves, please follow your scholar or group leader.
What is included in an Umrah package from Washington, DC
Every package is shaped around your family's pace and budget. A typical DC package includes:
- Round-trip flights from Dulles to Jeddah (JED) or Madinah (MED), with the nonstop compared against one-stop options for time, layover and arrival hour.
- Hotels in Makkah chosen by walking distance to the Haram: facing the courtyard, a 10 to 15 minute walk, or a shuttle-served property with more space.
- Hotels in Madinah in the central zone, most five to ten minutes on foot from the Prophet's Mosque.
- Transfers from the airport, between Makkah and Madinah by high-speed train (about two to two and a half hours) or private car, and back for your flight home.
- Visa guidance for the e-visa, Nusuk permit, passport validity and vaccination proof.
- Ziyarat tours such as Jabal al-Nour and Mount Arafat near Makkah, and Quba Mosque and Masjid al-Qiblatayn in Madinah.
- Group or private arrangements, with wheelchair and other assistance requested on every flight.
When to travel from Washington, DC for Umrah
For the 1448 Umrah season, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that visa issuance opened on May 31, 2026. The last visa issuance is set around March 9, 2027, the last entry around March 23, 2027 and the last departure around April 7, 2027. Umrah visas then pause for the Hajj season, expected in mid-May 2027, and reopen afterwards. The dates follow the lunar calendar, so confirm them before you book.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from approximately February 8 to March 9, 2027. Many DC-area families aim for the last ten nights, when hotels nearest the Haram are the first to sell out, so plan four to six months ahead.
Fairfax County Public Schools' 2026-2027 calendar gives three windows worth looking at. Thanksgiving break is November 25-27, 2026, which with the weekends makes a five-day gap, enough for a short trip if you add a few days. Winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027, the most popular family window. Spring break is March 22-26, 2027, which falls right at the published last entry date, so a spring break Umrah needs visas issued by about March 9 and arrival in Saudi Arabia by about March 23. Loudoun, Prince William, Montgomery and DC Public Schools calendars differ, so bring your own dates.
Local planning notes for DC-area pilgrims
Dulles is about 26 miles west of downtown DC. The Metro Silver Line now has a Washington Dulles International Airport station, which is useful for travelers without heavy bags, and the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Access Road reach the terminal from Tysons and the Beltway. At the airport, the AeroTrain links the main terminal to the midfield concourses, so allow time after security.
Reagan National (DCA) has no long-haul international flights, and Baltimore/Washington (BWI) has no Gulf service, so Umrah trips from those airports start with a connection. For most of Maryland, Virginia and the District, driving to Dulles or taking the Silver Line is simpler.
Pilgrims from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Frederick and Annapolis also start at Dulles, either by car or with a short domestic flight. Because we are local, we can advise on long-term parking, early-morning drop-offs and the best time to leave home for an evening departure, and we build the whole trip around the Dulles schedule rather than a one-size itinerary.
Be at Dulles at least three hours before an international departure, and three and a half hours during Ramadan, Thanksgiving and the winter break. Winter snow and ice in the Washington area can slow the roads and delay departures, so we avoid tight connections in January and February and explain travel protection before you pay.
We request wheelchair assistance at every airport, reserve aisle seats and choose hotels with short walks for older parents. Our senior travel reservations desk arranges these details every day.
Mosque and community groups from Northern Virginia and Maryland often travel together over the winter break and in Ramadan. For ten or more travelers we reserve a block of seats, keep hotels and transfers together and assign one coordinator. See how we handle group travel flights. First-time pilgrims can call without any preparation.
Umrah visa and documents for US passport holders
Saudi authorities set these rules and revise them between seasons, so confirm them before travel. Before booking, also read the current US State Department travel advisory for Saudi Arabia and the countries you connect through, consider enrolling in its STEP alert service, and expect some Gulf flight schedules to change at short notice in 2026. In recent seasons the checklist has been:
- Visa: the Saudi tourist e-visa, which US citizens have been eligible for and which the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has confirmed allows Umrah outside the Hajj period, or an Umrah e-visa through Nusuk or a licensed provider.
- Nusuk permit: an Umrah permit reserved in the Nusuk app before performing Umrah at Masjid al-Haram.
- Passport: valid for at least six months from your date of entry.
- Vaccination: quadrivalent (ACWY) meningococcal vaccine at least 10 days before arrival and within the last three to five years, depending on vaccine type.
- Mixed-nationality families: a separate check for anyone traveling on a non-US passport.
