Assalamu Alaikum. An Umrah package from Chicago with Fond Travels covers your flights from O'Hare (ORD) to Jeddah or Madinah with one well-timed connection, hotels within walking distance of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, airport pickups and the high-speed train between the two cities, and step-by-step help with the e-visa and the Nusuk permit. Everything is planned with a real travel expert over the phone. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 at any time, whether you live in the city, the western or northwestern suburbs, northwest Indiana or southern Wisconsin, and we will compare connecting cities, layover lengths and hotel distances for your dates in a single conversation. Below is a Chicago-specific guide: how the flights work from O'Hare, which connection suits which traveler, how Chicago school calendars line up with the 2026-2027 Umrah season, and how to handle winter travel out of ORD.
How do you fly from Chicago to Jeddah or Madinah?
There is no nonstop flight from Chicago to Saudi Arabia at present, so every Umrah itinerary from O'Hare includes one connection. That is less of a drawback than it sounds. O'Hare has regular long-haul service to several of the busiest connecting hubs for pilgrims, which means a wide choice of departure times and plenty of onward flights to both Jeddah and Madinah.
The most common connecting cities from ORD are Istanbul, Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with Amman as a regional alternative and London, Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam on the European side. Most departures toward the Gulf leave Chicago in the afternoon or evening and arrive the following evening local time. Counting the layover, the total journey usually runs 16 to 21 hours. The shortest options tend to route through Istanbul, while Gulf connections often offer the best timing for landing in Madinah.
Almost all long-haul international flights leave from Terminal 5 at O'Hare, although a few carriers that partner with domestic airlines check in at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Your ticket shows the check-in terminal, and your travel expert confirms it again before you leave home.
Jeddah first or Madinah first from Chicago?
Chicago travelers cross eight or nine time zones, which makes the order of the cities more important than many people expect. If you land in Jeddah and head straight for Makkah, you perform Umrah at the end of a long travel day. Pilgrims on this routing usually change into ihram before the final flight, because the miqat is crossed in the air before landing. The high-speed railway station at Jeddah airport's Terminal 1 takes you on to Makkah without a long drive.
If you land in Madinah first, you can rest for a few days near the Prophet's Mosque, adjust to the time difference and then enter ihram at the Madinah miqat on the way to Makkah. This order is our usual recommendation for seniors, families with young children and first-time pilgrims. The return then leaves from Jeddah, so nobody travels the same road twice.
Route options from Chicago
| Routing | Typical journey | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| One stop via Istanbul | About 16 to 19 hours | Travelers who want the shortest total time and frequent onward flights to Jeddah and Madinah |
| One stop via Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi | About 17 to 21 hours | Madinah-first plans, evening departures from ORD, families who like a longer rest stop |
| One stop via Amman | About 17 to 20 hours | Pilgrims combining Umrah with a family visit in the region |
| One stop via London, Frankfurt, Paris or Amsterdam | About 17 to 21 hours | Extra departure times in peak weeks when Gulf connections fill up |
| Two stops from a smaller Midwest airport via O'Hare | About 20 to 25 hours | Travelers in Wisconsin, Indiana or Michigan who prefer not to drive to Chicago |
What an Umrah package from Chicago includes
No two groups travel the same way, so we build each package around the people in it. For Chicago pilgrims a package usually covers:
- Flights from O'Hare to Jeddah (JED) or Madinah (MED) with one connection, chosen for layover length and arrival time, plus seat requests and baggage rules explained before you pay.
- Makkah accommodation in the walking-distance category you choose: steps from the Haram courtyard, a 10 to 15 minute walk, or a shuttle-served hotel with more space for the money.
- Madinah accommodation close to Masjid an-Nabawi, usually a five to ten minute walk from the gates.
- Ground travel: meet-and-greet at the airport, the high-speed train or a private car between Makkah and Madinah, and your return transfer.
- Visa and permit guidance in the right order, from passport check to Nusuk permit.
- Ziyarat tours to sites such as Jabal al-Nour and Mount Arafat around Makkah, and Quba Mosque, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and Mount Uhud in Madinah.
- Group or private arrangements, from a scheduled departure with a group leader to a family trip on your own dates.
When is the best time for Umrah from Chicago?
Start with the season calendar. For the 1448 Umrah season, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that visa issuance began on May 31, 2026 and set the last issuance around March 9, 2027, the last entry around March 23, 2027 and the last departure around April 7, 2027. Umrah visas then pause for Hajj, expected in mid-May 2027, and resume after the pilgrimage. Lunar dates can move by a day or two, so confirm before travel.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to fall between approximately February 8 and March 9, 2027. In 2027 the CPS spring break falls after Ramadan ends, so many families plan a shorter trip for the last ten nights or travel with older children who can miss a few school days. Demand from the Chicago area peaks in those final ten days, so four to six months of planning time is sensible.
The CPS winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027, the most popular family window of the year. Spring break is March 22-26, 2027, which sits right at the published last entry date for the season, so a spring-break Umrah would have to begin at the very start of the break and should be checked with your expert first. After the school year ends in mid-June 2027, summer trips are possible once the new season opens, although Makkah is extremely hot. Suburban and private school calendars differ, so bring your own dates to the call.
Local planning notes for Chicago pilgrims
Getting to O'Hare is the first leg of the journey. By car, allow extra time on the Kennedy Expressway and the Tri-State Tollway during the evening rush, when most flights toward the Gulf depart. The Blue Line train runs directly into the airport, which avoids traffic but means handling luggage on the train. Families from the south and west suburbs often prefer a car service booked for a set time.
Winter is the peak Umrah season and the toughest time to fly out of Chicago. Snow and de-icing can delay departures from December to March, so we avoid tight connections on winter itineraries and suggest arriving at the airport a little earlier than usual. Plan on at least three hours before an international departure, and three and a half during Ramadan and the winter break.
Many seniors from the Chicago area travel with adult children who live in other states. We can book family members from different US airports so everyone meets at the connecting city and lands together. Wheelchair assistance, aisle seats and hotels with short walks are arranged by our senior travel booking specialists.
Chicagoland has large community groups that travel together each year, often for the winter break and the end of Ramadan. For ten or more travelers we reserve a block of seats from O'Hare, keep the whole group on the same connection and assign one coordinator. Learn more about flights for groups of ten or more. First-time pilgrims can call without any preparation; we start with the passport and work forward.
Umrah visa and documents for US passport holders
Saudi Arabia sets the entry rules and updates them between seasons, so confirm before travel. The requirements in recent seasons have been:
- An e-visa. US citizens have qualified for the Saudi tourist e-visa, and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has confirmed that all visa types allow Umrah outside the Hajj period. An Umrah e-visa through the Nusuk platform or a licensed provider is the alternative.
- A Nusuk Umrah permit, reserved in the app for a specific time slot before you perform Umrah.
- A US passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date.
- Proof of ACWY meningococcal vaccination, given at least 10 days before arrival and within the last three to five years depending on the vaccine type.
- Separate checks for non-US passports in your group, since rules vary by nationality.
