Assalamu Alaikum. An Umrah package from Houston with Fond Travels includes your flights from IAH, Houston's main international airport, to Jeddah or Madinah, a hotel within walking distance of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, a hotel close to the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah, airport transfers and the high-speed train between the holy cities, and clear guidance on the e-visa and Nusuk permit. You plan it with a real travel expert over the phone. Call +1 (323) 800 6001 any hour of the day, whether you live in Sugar Land, Katy, Pearland, Spring or inside the Loop, and we will compare connections, arrival times and hotel distances for your dates while you are on the line. This guide explains the Houston side of the trip: what flying from IAH involves, the connection that suits each kind of traveler, how Houston ISD holidays fit the 2026-2027 Umrah season, and practical notes on terminals, traffic and Gulf Coast weather.
Is there a direct flight from Houston to Jeddah?
Not at present. People often search for a Houston to Jeddah direct flight, but schedule data shows no nonstop service between IAH and Saudi Arabia, so Umrah flights from Houston include at least one connection. Your travel expert checks for any new service when you call, because airlines do add routes. Hobby Airport does not offer long-haul flights to the Middle East, so nearly every Houston pilgrim starts at IAH.
The good news is that Houston has regular nonstop flights to three of the busiest connecting hubs for pilgrims: Doha, Dubai and Istanbul. From each of them there are several onward flights a day to Jeddah and to Madinah. European connections through London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris add more departure times. Counting the layover, the total journey is usually 17 to 22 hours. Flights toward the Gulf typically leave Houston in the evening and land in Saudi Arabia the next night, local time.
Another option is a domestic flight to New York or Washington, DC and then a nonstop to Jeddah from there. It adds a US connection but keeps the long overseas flight to a single leg, which some travelers prefer.
Arriving in Jeddah or Madinah: which order suits you?
Houston is eight or nine hours behind Saudi Arabia, and the trip from IAH is one of the longer ones in the country, so the order of the two cities matters. A Jeddah-first itinerary works well for strong travelers who want to complete Umrah early. You land at King Abdulaziz International Airport, where the high-speed railway station is connected to Terminal 1, or take a car to Makkah in roughly an hour to 90 minutes. Since the miqat is crossed in the air on the way into Jeddah, most pilgrims enter ihram before the last flight.
A Madinah-first itinerary is gentler. You spend the first nights near Masjid an-Nabawi, recover from the journey, then enter ihram at the Madinah miqat before the train or drive to Makkah, and fly home from Jeddah. We recommend it for grandparents, children and anyone performing Umrah for the first time. Guidance on the rites comes from your scholar or group leader; we handle the logistics.
Route options from Houston
| Routing | Typical journey | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| One stop via Doha | About 17 to 20 hours | Evening departures from IAH and short onward flights to Jeddah or Madinah |
| One stop via Dubai | About 18 to 21 hours | Travelers who want the widest choice of onward flight times |
| One stop via Istanbul | About 17 to 20 hours | Pilgrims who prefer a mid-journey break in a daytime hub |
| One stop via London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Paris | About 17 to 22 hours | Peak weeks when Gulf connections are full |
| Domestic flight to New York or Washington, then nonstop to Jeddah | About 18 to 23 hours | Travelers who want a single long overseas leg |
What your Houston Umrah package includes
Each package is shaped around the travelers, their budget and their pace. Most Houston packages we book by phone include:
- Flights from IAH to Jeddah (JED) or Madinah (MED), with connections compared for journey time and layover comfort, and the baggage allowance explained before you pay.
- A Makkah hotel in the distance band you prefer: overlooking or beside the Haram courtyard, a 10 to 15 minute walk, or a shuttle ride away with larger rooms.
- A Madinah hotel in the central area around the Prophet's Mosque, typically five to ten minutes on foot.
- Transfers on arrival and departure, plus the high-speed train (about two to two and a half hours) or a private car between Makkah and Madinah.
- Visa help: which e-visa to use, how to reserve the Nusuk permit and what proof of vaccination to carry.
- Ziyarat of Mount Arafat, Mina and Jabal Thawr near Makkah, and Quba Mosque and Mount Uhud in Madinah.
- Group departures or private trips on your own dates, with assistance requests noted for every flight.
When to travel for Umrah from Houston
The 1448 Umrah season calendar published by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah started visa issuance on May 31, 2026. It lists the last visa issuance around March 9, 2027, the last entry around March 23, 2027 and the last departure around April 7, 2027. Umrah then pauses while Saudi Arabia prepares for Hajj, expected in mid-May 2027, and reopens after it. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so confirm before travel.
Houston ISD's 2026-2027 calendar is unusually friendly to Umrah. Thanksgiving week (November 23-27, 2026) gives a full week off at a comfortable time of year in Makkah. The winter break runs from December 22 to January 1, with students returning on January 5, 2027, which suits a ten-night trip. Spring break (March 8-12, 2027) coincides with the expected last days of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, but the published last visa issuance date falls around March 9, so visas must be secured well before then.
Ramadan 2027 is expected from approximately February 8 to March 9, 2027. Book four to six months ahead for any Ramadan or spring-break trip. The HISD school year ends on May 28, 2027, close to when Umrah is expected to reopen after Hajj, so an early-summer trip depends on the new season's published opening date. Fort Bend, Cy-Fair, Katy and private school calendars differ, so share your own dates.
Local planning notes for Houston pilgrims
IAH is a long drive from many Houston suburbs. Allow extra time on the Hardy Toll Road, I-45 and Beltway 8, especially for evening departures that meet the rush hour, and add more for families coming from Fort Bend County or Galveston. Pilgrims from Beaumont, College Station and the Rio Grande Valley often fly into IAH or drive in the day before.
IAH has been rebuilding its international facilities. The new international central processor opened in Terminal E in 2026, and international check-in has been moving there from Terminal D. Your expert confirms the check-in area for your flight a day or two before departure. Arrive at least three hours before an international flight, and three and a half hours during Ramadan and the holidays.
Summer and early fall bring thunderstorms and the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June through November. For trips in those months we prefer longer connections, and we explain your travel protection options before you pay.
For senior pilgrims, we request wheelchair assistance at IAH and at each connection, reserve aisle seats and choose hotels with elevators close to the Haram. Our senior travel reservation service takes care of these details every day.
Greater Houston's community groups often travel together over Thanksgiving and the winter break. For ten or more travelers we hold seats on one connection, match hotels and appoint a single coordinator; read about group flight bookings for larger parties. First-time pilgrims are welcome to call with no preparation at all.
Umrah visa and documents for US passport holders
These rules are set by Saudi authorities and can change, so confirm before travel. In recent seasons pilgrims have needed:
- A valid visa: US citizens have been able to use the Saudi tourist e-visa, and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has said holders of all visa types may perform Umrah outside the Hajj period. The Umrah e-visa through Nusuk or a licensed provider is the other route.
- A Nusuk permit booked in the app for your chosen date before performing Umrah at Masjid al-Haram.
- Six months of passport validity from the day you enter Saudi Arabia.
- ACWY meningococcal vaccination at least 10 days before arrival, within the last three to five years depending on the vaccine.
- A separate check for any traveler holding a non-US passport.
