Why the Middle East for your vacation
Few regions deliver such contrast in a single trip: futuristic skylines and thousand-year-old souks, desert dunes and coral reefs, sacred sites and indulgent beach resorts. Service standards in the Gulf are exceptionally high, and Middle East vacation packages are easy to combine with onward travel to Asia, Africa or Europe.
The most requested destinations are Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the Holy Land & Israel, Jordan & Petra and Egypt. Travelers wanting something quieter or newer look at Qatar & Doha, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia: Riyadh & AlUla and Lebanon.
What's included in a Middle East package
- Round-trip flights on major airlines, including open-jaw routings (into Dubai, home from Cairo or Tel Aviv).
- Hotel or resort nights with the meal plan you choose: breakfast included, all-inclusive at beach resorts, or room only.
- Airport transfers and intercity transport, including private drivers between Amman, Petra and Wadi Rum.
- Optional guided tours: desert safaris, Petra, Holy Land pilgrimages and the pyramids of Giza.
- Optional cruise legs, such as a Nile sailing between Luxor and Aswan, with the pre-cruise hotel arranged.
- A named agent who handles visa questions, changes and delays 24/7.
Best time to visit the Middle East
The winter season from November through March is the best time for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and the wider Gulf, with highs in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and clear skies. Summers, roughly June through September, are extremely hot, with highs regularly over 100°F and heavy humidity on the coast. Jordan, Israel and Egypt are most comfortable in spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). Ramadan moves each year and changes daytime dining hours; your expert will flag the dates. Christmas, Easter and the major Jewish holidays are peak periods in the Holy Land.
Where to stay: areas and resort styles
In Dubai, choose between the beach resorts of Jumeirah and Palm Jumeirah, the skyline hotels of Downtown and the Marina, and the old-city character around Deira and the Creek. Abu Dhabi offers Corniche and Saadiyat Island beaches plus Yas Island for theme parks. Jordan pairs city hotels in Amman with lodges at Petra, luxury desert camps in Wadi Rum and spa resorts on the Dead Sea. In Israel, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv's beachfront anchor most itineraries. Egypt combines Cairo and Giza hotels with Luxor and Aswan on the Nile and Red Sea all-inclusive resorts at Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada. Oman's Muscat coast, Bahrain's Manama waterfront and AlUla's desert lodges round out the options. Styles range from ultra-luxury and family all-inclusive beach resorts to boutique heritage houses; well-known resort brands and independent hotels are both available.
Things to do in the Middle East
- Ride to the top of the world's tallest building, dune-bash in the desert and bargain in the gold and spice souks of Dubai.
- Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, then spend a day at Yas Island's theme parks.
- Walk the Siq into Petra at dawn, camp under the stars in Wadi Rum and float in the Dead Sea.
- Follow the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, visit Bethlehem and Nazareth, and swim in the Sea of Galilee.
- See the pyramids of Giza and the Egyptian Museum, then cruise the Nile between Luxor and Aswan.
- Explore Doha's Souq Waqif, Oman's wadis and the Nabataean tombs of Hegra at AlUla.
Getting there from the US
Nonstop flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha run roughly 12–14 hours from New York and other East Coast gateways, and 16+ hours from West Coast gateways such as Los Angeles. Tel Aviv, Amman and Cairo take roughly 10–12 hours nonstop from New York, or connect through a European or Gulf hub. Entry rules vary by country and change, so verify requirements before travel: US citizens currently receive a visa on arrival in the UAE, a visa on arrival or e-visa for Egypt, a visa on arrival in Jordan (the Jordan Pass bundles it with Petra admission), visa-exempt entry to Israel with an ETA-IL authorization, visa-exempt entry to Qatar, and e-visas for Oman and Saudi Arabia. Carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival. Currencies are the UAE dirham, the Qatari and Saudi riyal, the Jordanian and Bahraini dinar, the Omani rial, the Israeli shekel and the Egyptian pound. Arabic is the official language, with English widely used and Hebrew in Israel. The Gulf runs 8–9 hours ahead of US Eastern time depending on daylight saving; Israel, Jordan and Egypt are 7–8 hours ahead.
Who this package suits
Couples and honeymooners favor Dubai and Abu Dhabi beach resorts, Oman's coast and a Petra-and-Wadi-Rum add-on. Families do well in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where theme parks, waterparks and kid-friendly resorts fill a week. Seniors and faith-based travelers favor the Holy Land, Jordan and Egypt with a private driver and escorted touring; ask about senior travel reservations. Church groups and family reunions use coordinated group travel flights. For 12–16 hours in the air, ask about lie-flat seats through our business class and first class reservations. Solo travelers find the Gulf cities easy and secure to navigate.
